NetScout Systems Delivers AppScout for Web-Based, Real-Time Visibility of Networked Applications.

WESTFORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 13, 1998--

AppScout Delivers On the Benefits of Application Flow Management by

Providing Business-Relevant Network Information to

a Range of Audiences

NetScout(R) Systems, Inc. today announced the delivery of AppScout(tm) application flow monitor in support of the company's Application Flow Management architecture. AppScout provides real-time, end-to-end views of application performance over an enterprise network for SAP/R3 and other business-oriented applications. These views are essential for network and application managers to understand the impact that an application has on the network, as well as the network's impact on the application. Application performance information is critical for predicting potential network problems, identifying network requirements, optimizing network performance, and delivering on service level agreements.

Unlike alternative approaches which simulate an application's impact on the network with synthetic transactions, AppScout observes actual application flows. This gives a true and complete view of the network performance that is delivered to the business. As a result, network managers, application developers and help desk personnel can tell when there is a problem, why there is a problem and what is causing the problem.

Customers Praise Business Perspective

"AppScout gives me information that until now was only available from separate tools, or not at all," said Dennis Thomas, manager of enterprise network services for Tektronix, Inc. "It is our job to ensure that the network meets the needs of the business and AppScout provides my team with the key information necessary to do this.

"Now we can quickly determine if there is an impending im·pend

problem, often before the user does. Being able to restore service levels quickly not only reduces user frustration, but also reduces calls to the help desk."

"AppScout gives me a business-oriented network perspective by providing the data I need to monitor network performance as it pertains to end-user application usage," said Pat Meyers, manager of WAN services, Ceridian "It allows me to see the number of clients using a given application and the average application flow response times. In addition, AppScout lets me look at and manage service level issues, and helps me navigate through historical views of application usage, enabling me to anticipate, evaluate and control network performance."

Tracking the performance of networked applications is one of the most important elements of managing an enterprise network. AppScout provides multi-dimensional views - including response times, network and application utilization, network health and link quality - that are essential to application service level management, capacity planning Determining the required future configuration of hardware and software for a network, datacenter or Web site. There are numerous capacity planning tools on the market used to monitor and analyze the performance of the current hardware and software. , and policy validation. This level of information is necessary for effective, business-relevant decision-making, and enhances collaboration between the network and application management teams.

"In our study of U.S. enterprises `Business-Centric Network Management and Downtime The time during which a computer is not functioning due to hardware, operating system or application program failure.  Costs,' we found that total LAN (Local Area Network) A communications network that serves users within a confined geographical area. The "clients" are the user's workstations typically running Windows, although Mac and Linux clients are also used.  management budgets average about $2 million, yet downtime costs $7.6 million, showing that the financial impact of network degradation and failure is far in excess of the network management budget itself," said Michael Howard

, principal analyst of Infonetics Research. "This means that business-oriented network management products like AppScout can have measurable, direct financial impact. The capability to have an instant view locating the network delays and their likely causes is undeniably valuable. NetScout Systems is a leader in delivering useful information to manage business-critical applications performance across company-wide networks."

"By determining what applications load the network, network planners can intelligently determine whether to add capacity or adjust the priorities of networked applications," said Michael Szabados, vice president, marketing for NetScout Systems. "By tuning the network to the priorities of the business, companies can realize sizable savings in capital investmentBesides, adding capacity may often not be the best solution: the problem may actually reside in areas such as mis-configured or misused applications. AppScout can quickly uncover the problem and right the course of action before having to make additional investments in infrastructure."

Cisco Management Connection Certified

AppScout application flow monitor has received Cisco Management Connection certification for use with CiscoWorks2000, Cisco Systems' new Web-based enterprise network management product suite that leverages web-based standards to seamlessly integrate network management applications from multiple vendors.

Leverages Network Instrumentation

AppScout uses data from NetScout Probes that includes the Application Response Time (ART) MIB (1) (Management Information Base) The hierarchical database used by the simple network management protocol (SNMP) to describe the particular device being monitored. MIB objects are identified using ASN.1 syntax. See SNMP, RMON, OID and ASN.1. . ART MIB technology enables the actual measurement of the response times experienced by all users of a particular application on the monitored network and is available as a software agent option for all NetScout Probes. Complete network visibility is achieved by placing ART MIB-enabled probes on key server links, trunks and WAN links. As opposed to desktop agent implementations, instrumentation dramatically reduces administration complexity and overall impact on the system, while delivering an end-through-end view of all network activity.

System Requirements To be used efficiently, all computer software needs certain hardware components or other software resources to be present on a computer system. These pre-requisites are known as (computer) system requirements and are often used as a guideline as opposed to an absolute rule.  and Availability

AppScout is a self-contained application that consists of an integrated polling engine and web server and operates on UNIX UNIX

Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking. . The product is now available for US$12,500 and includes 10 bundled ART MIB licenses. Additional ART MIB licenses are available for $695.00 per probe. Support for Web-based application See Web application.  (Intranets, e-commerce and Internet access See how to access the Internet. ) tracking is included with the AppScout software, and add-on Application Analysis Modules are now available for SAP/R3 and custom applications. Additional enterprise-class application support will follow for applications such as BAAN, Lotus Notes Messaging and groupware software from IBM Lotus that was introduced in 1989 for OS/2 and later expanded to Windows, Mac, Unix, NetWare, AS/400 and S/390. Notes provides e-mail, document sharing, workflow, group discussions and calendaring and scheduling. , Microsoft Exchange Messaging and groupware software for Windows from Microsoft. It can be accessed by Web browsers, the Exchange client, versions of Outlook and the earlier Windows Inbox. , PeopleSoft, and Oracle.
