NetManage Announces Industry's Most Comprehensive Host Connectivity Solution for Corporate IntraNets; TCP/IP, SNA and Async Network Applications in a Single Package.

CUPERTINO, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--March 19, 1996--NetManage, the leading supplier of TCP/IP TCP/IP
in full Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol

Standard Internet communications protocols that allow digital computers to communicate over long distances.
based IntraNet applications and Internet connectivity software for Windows, announced today the industry's most comprehensive host information access solution, Swift 2.0.

Swift provides a company wide host access solution that includes a comprehensive set of host access services including terminal and printer emulation, e-mail and Web. Swift is a cost-effective, easy-to-use, easy-to-support, one-stop vendor solution for corporations needing to expand their information resources regardless of the protocol of choice.

Swift is based on NetManage's award-winning Chameleon Desktop host connectivity applications. Swift supports IBM mainframe, AS/400 and VMS/Unix host access from Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 3.1 and Windows NT desktops over TCP/IP, SNA (Systems Network Architecture) IBM's mainframe network standards introduced in 1974. Originally a centralized architecture with a host computer controlling many terminals, enhancements, such as APPN and APPC (LU 6. , or Asynchronous Refers to events that are not synchronized, or coordinated, in time. The following are considered asynchronous operations. The interval between transmitting A and B is not the same as between B and C. The ability to initiate a transmission at either end.  connections in one comprehensive package.

Swift supports a common multi-host interface, reliable host emulation services, multiprotocol support and includes NetManage's popular WebSurfer Web browser, industry standard SMTP (Simple Mail Transfer Protocol) The standard e-mail protocol on the Internet and part of the TCP/IP protocol suite, as defined by IETF RFC 2821. SMTP defines the message format and the message transfer agent (MTA), which stores and forwards the mail.  e-mail, and the widely adopted NS/Router client software. Using these applications, a Swift user can communicate, collaborate and share information within an enterprise IntraNet or over the Internet.

"Our customers want a single vendor solution for building corporate IntraNets using TCP/IP and SNA. Swift provides the industry's most comprehensive terminal emulation solution that allows corporations to expand their enterprise network reach while protecting their existing investments regardless of the underlying network protocol," said Zvi Alon, president and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of NetManage. "Swift also provides a basis for easily expanding IntraNet services in a seamless and non-disruptive manner as highlighted by customers such as Paragon Cable."

"Paragon Cable needed a comprehensive and easy-to-use host access package that would allow us to quickly integrate existing software and multi-protocols. Swift is the only solution that matched our requirements and could seamlessly access our billing services and Time Warner from the same terminal. Swift has allowed us to increase our overall host connectivity efficiency and protect our existing assets," said Bob Thrasher, manager of information technology, Paragon Cable, a Division of Time Warner.

Building IntraNets with Swift

According to IDC Research, SNA client product shipments were up 22% in 1995 versus 1994. IDC confirms that corporations are leveraging from their existing network architecture to expand their enterprise. In most cases these companies are also using Internet based TCP/IP technology and other proprietary protocols that need to coexist. Swift provides a Windows-based multihost and multiprotocol enterprise-wide consistent interface solution that allows these corporations to extend and change their network infrastructure and protocols transparently.

Swift provides corporations with powerful applications to access IBM mainframe, AS/400, and VMS/UNIX hosts. The package supports 3270 terminal and printer emulation including TN3270E, a new standard for SNA display and printer functionality over TCP/IP. Swift also supports IBM AS/400 applications including full featured 5250 terminal and printer emulation, AS/400 SQL Transfer and NS/Folders.

Swift includes the NetSoft's N/S Router as a standard feature and also supports popular AS/400 connectivity products such as the IBM PC Support Router or the IBM Client Access/400 Router. Swift also provides VMS/UNIX connectivity with Telnet and ASCII ASCII or American Standard Code for Information Interchange, a set of codes used to represent letters, numbers, a few symbols, and control characters. Originally designed for teletype operations, it has found wide application in computers.  applications which emulate most popular ASCII terminal types including: DEC VT340 and VT420, TeleVideo 950/955, Wyse 50/60, SCO ANSI (American National Standards Institute, New York, www.ansi.org) A membership organization founded in 1918 that coordinates the development of U.S. voluntary national standards in both the private and public sectors. It is the U.S. member body to ISO and IEC. , AT386, ANSI, and TTY. Swift's robust Visual Basic-compliant scripting language and OLE Automation allows users to automate emulation tasks in TN3270, TN5250 or Telnet applications.

Included in the Swift package are robust SMTP, POP, Profs Mail and Web browser applications for accessing the information highway. Swift users can quickly go from a terminal emulation session to the Internet with a click of a button. Swift comes with NetManage's robust TCP/IP stack which includes important enterprise-level benefits not offered in free stacks, including support for 16 and 32 bit platforms; built-in network diagnostics and support for BOOTP (BOOTstrap Protocol) A TCP/IP protocol used by a diskless workstation or network computer (NC) to obtain its IP address and other network information such as server address and default gateway.  and DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) Software that automatically assigns temporary IP addresses to client stations logging into an IP network. It eliminates having to manually assign permanent "static" IP addresses. DHCP software runs in servers and routers.  (dynamic host configuration protocol (protocol) Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol - (DHCP) A protocol that provides a means to dynamically allocate IP addresses to computers on a local area network. The system administrator assigns a range of IP addresses to DHCP and each client computer on the LAN has its TCP/IP ); and SLIP, CLSIP, PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol) The most popular method for transporting IP packets over a serial link between the user and the ISP. Developed in 1994 by the IETF and superseding the SLIP protocol, PPP establishes the session between the user's computer and the ISP using  and native ISDN ISDN

NetManage also offers an IntraNet package that provides companies everything they need for building their corporate IntraNets. The IntraNet package includes the "best of breed" Swift terminal emulation suite as well as key IntraNet applications including: Internet and client server applications such as FTP, Gopher, IRC (Internet Relay Chat) Computer conferencing on the Internet. There are hundreds of IRC channels on numerous subjects that are hosted on IRC servers around the world.
