NetLogic Microsystems, Inc., the leader in network data plane packet classification and forwarding solutions, today announced production of the industry's largest database network search engine.

The NSEx512 product family can accommodate 512K Layer 3 routing entries per device. It is now available at 100 million searches per second (MSPS) with parts expected to ship at 133 MSPS by year-end. This high-performance family of search engines is targeted to meet the challenging requirements of OC-48 and OC-192 Internet routers, switches and other networking equipment.

Another first is the ability for the NSEx512 to handle multiple search operations per clock cycle, which will drastically improve the look-up performance of existing systems and will allow for 500+ MSPS by year-end. The device's advanced-technology parallel search capability enables simultaneous searches on multiple logical tables based on a single input string. Because most searches contain redundant information, this is an extremely efficient method for increasing search performance.

Another significant feature added to the NSEx512 is on-chip soft error detection. This feature detects errors in the database, thereby increasing product reliability and performance. Typically caused by either alpha particles or cosmic rays, soft errors are becoming more common as process geometries shrink.

The NSEx512 also offers the widest user-defined fields for QoS enforcement, IPv6 classification and other content-based packet classification functions. The database size and entry-width flexibility improve the performance of network database searches for enterprise switches/routers, metropolitan area networking equipment and Internet edge routers. Additionally, the device is depth cascadable without search rate penalty to accommodate up to two million entries. This feature allows database scalability with a consistent software and hardware interface regardless of the number of devices in cascade.
