NetFRAME Systems shipping new high-speed, fault tolerant DataJET tape backup & restore system for NetWare 4 servers.MILPITAS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dec. 7, 1994--NetFRAME Systems Inc. (NASDAQ NASDAQ in full National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations U.S. market for over-the-counter securities. Established in 1971 by the National Association of Securities Dealers (NASD), NASDAQ is an automated quotation system that reports on :NETF NETF NATO Expanded Task Force NETF Nuclear Energy Test Facility ) Wednesday announced Release 3.0 of its DataJET tape backup Using magnetic tape for storing duplicate copies of hard disk files. Users can add an internal or external tape drive to their desktop computers for backup purposes, and files are typically copied to the tapes using a backup utility that updates on a periodic schedule. and restore system that now supports customer environments running Novell NetWare (operating system, networking) Novell NetWare - Novell, Inc.'s proprietary networking operating system for the IBM PC. NetWare uses the IPX/SPX, NetBEUI or TCP/IP network protocols. It supports MS-DOS, Microsoft Windows, OS/2, Macintosh and Unix clients. 4 on NetFRAME or EISA-based servers. The new software release runs on DataJET systems configured with eight, four and three drive tape arrays. "Customers running NetWare 4 servers maintain high volumes of business critical data that demand a backup and restore solution capable of providing bullet-proof fault tolerance See fault tolerant. (architecture) fault tolerance - 1. The ability of a system or component to continue normal operation despite the presence of hardware or software faults. This often involves some degree of redundancy. 2. and extremely high-speed backups," said John Van Sielen, vice president of sales and marketing at NetFRAME Systems. "DataJET Release 3.0 delivers precisely that." DataJET Release 3.0, which supports NetWare 3.12 and 4.02 as well as DOS, Macintosh, OS/2, and UNIX UNIX Operating system for digital computers, developed by Ken Thompson of Bell Laboratories in 1969. It was initially designed for a single user (the name was a pun on the earlier operating system Multics). name spaces, is designed primarily for servers housing 10 Gigabytes (GB) of data and beyond. Release 3.0 also provides simple backup and restore of NetWare 4.02 directory services in their native mode. For those customers upgrading to NetWare 4, DataJET Release 3.0 provides a highly secure, high-speed system for migrating data from NetWare 3.x servers. Because DataJET uses RAID 5 (redundant array of inexpensive disks Redundant Array of Inexpensive Disks - Redundant Arrays of Independent Disks ) algorithms, the system can tolerate the failure of any tape cartridge See cartridge. or drive without losing data. With the addition of new queuing algorithms in Release 3.0, backup performance rates of 15GB per hour have been achieved. With its combination of fault tolerance and high-speed backup performance, DataJET Release 3.0 allows network administrators to achieve the equivalent of Novell's recommendation to complete two full backups prior to converting a server from NetWare 3.x to 4.x. Prior to the availability of DataJET, the process of creating two full backup sets was an extraordinarily time consuming procedure that introduced opportunities for data loss resulting from tape failures or operator error. DataJET Release 3.0 Enhancements - Vertical Queuing Algorithms: Release 3.0 provides backup performance improvements of up to 25% over Release 2.0 with the addition of vertical queues which create buffers of data waiting to be written to tape. This helps increase backup speeds by keeping the tapes constantly streaming. - Performance Regulator: Network administrators can now define the percentage of cache memory used for vertical queues. The default value is 25% of cache memory. If users are not logged in during the backup process, this value can be turned up to 50% for maximum performance. If many users are logged into the server during backup, this value can be reduced to 10%. - Burst Protocol: DataJET Release 3.0 uses a burst protocol to increase across-the-wire backup speeds up to two fold. This enhancement, called "JPX JPX Jpeg Extension ," sends multiple packets as a single burst. The acknowledge response contains the receipt acknowledgement and a list of any packets that were expected but not received. Packets not received are re-translated in the next burst. - 64K Block Size Support: Unlike Release 1.0 and 2.0, which supported up to 32K block sizes, Release 3.0 supports all block sizes permitted in NetWare 3.1x and 4.x. - Backup Space Calculation: DataJET Release 3.0 estimates the backup space required from the volumes selected for backup. The required backup space is then compared to the DataJET tape hardware configuration. If the backup space requirement is less than the capacity of the DataJET hardware, the backup will be allowed. - Tape Drive Configuration Display: A listing of configured tape drives can be obtained through DataJET Release 3.0 software. The displayed information includes: the tape drive's SCSI SCSI in full Small Computer System Interface Once common standard for connecting peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, etc.) to small and medium-sized computers. SCSI has given way to faster standards, such as Firewire and USB. and adapter ID; manufacturer, model number and revision; support status of the loaded driver; and compression mode. - Simplified NLM Software that runs in a NetWare server. Although NetWare servers store DOS and Windows applications, they do not execute them. All programs that run in a NetWare server must be compiled into the NLM format. They are typically written in C and use Novell's libraries. Installation: DataJET Release 3.0 is installed through the NetWare install.nlm option, "Product Options." A custom NCF file (NetWare Command File) A file of NetWare commands that are executed one at a time, similar to a DOS batch (.BAT) file. The NetWare AUTOEXEC.NCF file is executed in the server at startup, just like the DOS AUTOEXEC.BAT file. is generated during the installation process which simplifies the load and unload of DataJET NLM. Pricing and Availability Release 3.0 software for the eight, four and three drive tape array versions of the DataJET backup and restore system is available now. Existing customers with Release 1.0 and 2.0 software can purchase Release 3.0 on the following basis: $295 for the three tape array configuration, $695 for the four tape array configuration, and $995 for the eight tape array configuration. Customers purchasing a software upgrade service by Dec. 30, 1994, will receive Release 3.0 free of charge. The maintenance service, which features an annual fee, entitles customers to unlimited software upgrades, technical bulletins, and BBS (1) (Bulletin Board System) A computer system used as an information source and forum for a particular interest group.
