Leading Research Consortium Consolidates Storage and Increases Ease of Management with NetApp[R] SAN, Virtualization, and Data Protection Solutions

SUNNYVALE, Calif. -- Network Appliance, Inc. (NASDAQ: NTAP), a leader in advanced networked storage solutions, today announced that the Immune Tolerance Network (ITN), an international collaboration of researchers who conduct clinical research of new immune tolerance therapies, has deployed a NetApp unified storage platform to improve data access and availability as well as provide new levels of security for mission-critical research data. The new NetApp system enables scholars around the world to study and share the latest breakthroughs in immune therapies and target effective strategies for combating human diseases.

To dramatically enhance its IT storage infrastructure, ITN deployed VMware Infrastructure across 30 physical servers and NetApp Fibre Channel SAN storage to replace direct attached storage. ITN used a pair of clustered NetApp FAS3000 series systems running Data ONTAP[R] 7G and SyncMirror[R] in their primary site in Herndon, Virginia. These systems then used cost-effective business continuity solutions by using SnapMirror[R] in the DR site in San Francisco, California. ITN used VMware Infrastructure to fully virtualize their production server and storage environment, which now consists of 150 virtualized servers and NetApp FlexVol[R] and NetApp FlexClone[R]. These solutions provide ITN the flexibility to rapidly allocate compute and storage resources, as well as data stores, to support new research activities with no additional storage or administrative overhead. The virtualized storage environment with FlexVol truly complements the virtualized server environment that VMware Infrastructure provides to get the maximum ROI from IT. Additionally, NetApp backup and disaster recovery solutions, including Snapshot[TM], SnapMirror, and SnapRestore[R], further safeguard data in the event of data loss or disaster.
