Nelvana's "Maggie and the Ferocious Beast" soars to a ferocious No. 1 on Nick Jr.
Nelvana Limited (NASDAQ: NELV and TSE: NTV) today announced that its new series, Maggie and the Ferocious Beast, has soared to the number one spot in the national Nielsen ratings among kids 2-5 after six weeks on Nick Jr., the premium preschool specialty service in the U.S.
Since its premiere on Nick Jr. on June 5, 2000, the lighthearted animated preschool series has become a number one favorite of kids 2-5, delivering an 8.1 rating and 37 share for the week ending July 16, 2000, according to the Nielsen Television Index (NTI). The show also posted number one rankings for the same time period with boys 2-5 (7.4 rating/34 share), girls 2-5 (8.9 rating/40 share) and girls 2-11 (6.1 rating/33 share).
Maggie and the Ferocious Beast makes its debut in Canada on Teletoon beginning on Saturday, August 26 at 10 a.m. It has also been sold to various international broadcasters, including Germany's RTV Family Entertainment, Nickelodeon in the U.K. and La Cinquieme and TPS in France.
Maggie and the Ferocious Beast is based on the best-selling Simon and Schuster children's book by Betty and Mickey Paraskevas. The series is set against the backdrop of Nowwhere Land, the imaginary world of five-year old Maggie. Her best friends are Hamilton Hocks and the Ferocious Beast, a bounding red and yellow polka dot creature with a heart of gold.
Maggie and the Ferocious Beast is attracting strong North American licensing and retail interest. To date, Nelvana has received a total of 17 licensing commitments, including Applause for plush, Children's Apparel Network for clothing and Worldwide Dreams for accessories.
Nelvana has completed production of 13 episodes of Maggie and the Ferocious Beast and commenced production of a second season of 13 half-hour episodes in July for delivery beginning in late Fall of this year.
