Nell: I've arranged my death; EUTHANASIA.


OUTSPOKEN journalist Nell McCafferty Nell McCafferty is a journalist, playwright, civil rights campaigner, and feminist. In her journalistic work she has written for The Irish Press, The Irish Times, The Sunday Tribune, and Hot Press.  yesterday revealed she will end her own life if a dangerous brain operation left her paralysed. The columnist, 65, said she had arrangements in place to travel to Holland or Switzerland for a legal euthanasia euthanasia (y'thənā`zhə), either painlessly putting to death or failing to prevent death from natural causes in cases of terminal illness or irreversible coma.  if the surgery went wrong.

Speaking on TV3's Midday she said: "I have a family history of it, my brother's aneurysm aneurysm (ăn`yrĭzəm), localized dilatation of a blood vessel, particularly an artery, or the heart.  burst and he woke up paralysed, my auntie's aneurysm burst and she went into a coma and died.

"So I was very aware of what might happen. And the thing I dreaded most is I'd wake up and I'd be paralysed.

"What gave me comfort through it all was I arranged with friends of mine to take me to Switzerland or Holland for euthanasia."
