about those Direct Long-Fiber Thermoplastic A polymer material that turns to liquid when heated and becomes solid when cooled. There are more than 40 types of thermoplastics, including acrylic, polypropylene, polycarbonate and polyethylene.  (D-LFT) technologies that are the buzz of the auto industry in Europe and the U.S. Come to Miami, where PLASTICS TECHNOLOGY has organized the first Long-Fiber Molding/Extrusion Conference for December 11-12. It's a rare opportunity to meet and mingle with dozens of innovators innovators

people who will try new things.

important figures in the farming or client community because they are the leaders in the introduction of new techniques and management systems.
in D-LFT and other long-fiber thermoplastic technologies, such as extrusion of structural profiles.

Long-fiber reinforcements may be one of the most important trends in plastics today. Fibers one-half to two inches long confer much higher levels of stiffness, strength, and toughness than do the one-eighth-inch reinforcements that have been used for decades. The hottest area of long-fiber technology, highlighted in several recent PLASTICS TECHNOLOGY articles, is in-line glass-fiber compounding and molding, known as D-LFT.

Among more than 20 speakers at the conference will be pioneers of D-LFT like Ron Hawley, founder of Composite Products Inc. and a new firm, Woodshed wood·shed

Technologies. You'll also get the European perspective from Rieter Automotive in Switzerland and the Fraunhofer Institute in Germany, both active in DLFT development. Numerous materials and machinery suppliers will present their contributions to D-LFT and other long fiber methods of injection and compression molding Compression molding is a method of molding in which the molding material, generally preheated, is first placed in an open, heated mold cavity. The mold is closed with a top force or plug member, pressure is applied to force the material into contact with all mold areas, and heat , compounding, and extrusion. All of this is worth a trip to Miami in December!
