In her second book, Burks tells the story of Neecey Shade, a free-spirited child who encountered abuse from her mother and the men in her mother's life. Neecey becomes her family's anchor and an example for her younger siblings siblings npl (formal) → frères et sœurs mpl (de mêmes parents) .

The story begins when Neecey is growing up in Chicago in the 1950s. She is the oldest of four children by Jesse Jesse (jĕs`ē), in the Bible, the descendant of Rahab, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and the father of David. Referring to the restoration of the Davidic monarchy, the Book of Isaiah speaks of a shoot coming from the "stump of Jesse.  and Ruby ruby, precious stone, the transparent red variety of corundum, found chiefly in Myanmar, Thailand, and Sri Lanka and classified among the most valuable of gems. The Myanmarese stones are blood red, the most valued tint being the "pigeon's blood. , but her life changes after she learns of her real past.

Throughout the book, the protagonist struggles with pain while managing to keep her siblings together. At times, this novel is sad and its images appear vivid and real. At other times, it is encouraging and triumphant. The book covers much ground in slightly more than 200 pages. Yet it is an example of beautiful storytelling Storytelling
