The story begins when Neecey is growing up in Chicago in the 1950s. She is the oldest of four children by Jesse Jesse (jĕs`ē), in the Bible, the descendant of Rahab, the grandson of Boaz and Ruth, and the father of David. Throughout the book, the protagonist struggles with pain while managing to keep her siblings together. At times, this novel is sad and its images appear vivid and real. At other times, it is encouraging and triumphant. The book covers much ground in slightly more than 200 pages. Yet it is an example of beautiful storytelling Storytelling Aesop semi-legendary fabulist of ancient Greece. [Gk. Lit.: Harvey, 10] Münchäusen Baron traveler grossly embellishes his experiences. [Ger. Lit. with brilliant diction, and it is so engaging it can be read in one sitting.
