Nearly 1,900 attend Rubber Div. meeting.

The Rubber Division, American Chemical Society The American Chemical Society (ACS) is a learned society (professional association) based in the United States that supports scientific inquiry in the field of chemistry. Founded in 1876 at New York University, the ACS currently has over 160,000 members at all degree-levels and in , hosted a total of 1,819 attendees for the Rubber Mini Expo and 174th Technical Meeting in Louisville, KY, October 14-16. This year's Rubber Mini Expo booth space was sold out to 168 total exhibitors.

At the 174th meeting, a keynote presentation was given by Dr. George Woodall, a toxicologist from the National Center for Environmental Assessment with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), independent agency of the U.S. government, with headquarters in Washington, D.C. It was established in 1970 to reduce and control air and water pollution, noise pollution, and radiation and to ensure the safe handling and , for the VIP Luncheon.

Long-time Rubber Division member, Leo Whalen, was also presented the Arnold Smith Special Service Award for his countless hours of dedication to serving in numerous leadership roles and committee positions.

This year's technical meeting was kicked off with a keynote presentation from Hugh D. Pace, chairman of the board and CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board.  of Pirelli Tire North America.

A total of 90 papers was presented at the 174th Technical Meeting. Twenty-two of those papers were presented by international attendees representing nine different countries.

2009 Chair Gary Homing was been leading a task force over the past year-and-a-half to develop activities to celebrate the Rubber Division's 100 Year Anniversary throughout 2009.

A centennial historical book, "The Rubber Mirror: Reflections of the Rubber Division's First 100 Years," was written by Hank Inman. The book is being published by the University of Akron Press The University of Akron Press is a university press that is part of the University of Akron. External link

This book will be available at a special black-tie optional Centennial Banquet to be held in Akron, OH, on Monday, May 4. Another event, a Birthday Party Reception, will be held on October 13, 2009, at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center The David L. Lawrence Convention Center is a 1.5 million square foot convention, conference and exhibition building in Downtown Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, United States. The Rubber Division completed business plans for implementing its strategic plan, developed last year. These plans are moving forward with actions for the Education & Publication Committee, Marketing Committee, Exhibits & Meeting Sites Committee and Membership Committee. The Executive Committee recently approved changing Division membership from a calendar year to a rolling 12-month program.
