"You develop a relationship with the guys," the Patriots coach said. "They've won for you, played for you, and given you everything they've got. At some point, you have to make those decisions. It's one of the least fun parts of the job."

The Patriots made five moves yesterday to get to the 75-man roster limit, placing guard Stephen Neal For the United States congressman, see .

 and guard Ryan Wendell.

On Saturday, rosters must be reduced to the regular-season limit of 53 players.

Belichick talked a bit yesterday about the process of getting down to that final number.

"We watch the practice film every day as a staff and of course we watch the games," Belichick said. "We talk about the players on a daily basis. Before each game, we talk about the players, not only how we're going to play them, but how things are going. After the game, we talk about them again, relative to how they played and also relative to how we're going to practice them or use them the following week in practice.

"It's an ongoing process. Of course, the health of the players plays an important factor in some of the roster decisions and the overall makeup of the squad."

Neal, who hurt his knee in the Super Bowl and underwent offseason shoulder surgery, spent all of training camp on the PUP. Beginning the regular season on PUP means he will miss at least the first six weeks.

O'Callaghan's shoulder injury will keep him out for the year.

The Patriots signed Webster, an eight-year veteran, in the offseason. He injured his hamstring the third day of camp and was out of practice until Monday. Eckel, who played in 12 games for the Patriots last season, had been hampered by an undisclosed injury during camp. Wendell was signed as a rookie free agent out of Fresno State in May.

Brady, Welker skip media

Tom Brady Thomas Edward Brady, Jr. (born August 3, 1977 in San Mateo, California) is an American football quarterback for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. Brady was drafted by the Patriots in the sixth round of the 2000 NFL Draft.  and Wes Welker Wesley Welker (born May 1, 1981 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma) is an American football wide receiver for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He played collegiately at Texas Tech.  were among the players not present for the media portion of yesterday's practice.

ESPN ESPN Entertainment and Sports Programming Network  reported Monday night that Brady, who has not played this preseason, has a deep bone bruise in his right foot.

Welker suffered a rib injury Friday night against the Eagles.

Headsets tested on defense

The Patriots used the new headset system for defensive players for the first time this preseason against the Eagles.

Linebackers Mike Vrabel Michael George Vrabel (born August 14, 1975 in Akron, Ohio) is an American football linebacker for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. Vrabel has been with the Patriots since 2001, after spending four seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers.  and Tedy Bruschi Tedy Lacap Bruschi (pronounced BREW-ski) (born June 9, 1973 in San Francisco, California) is an American football linebacker for the New England Patriots of the National Football League. He is of Filipino and Italian descent.  had green dots on their helmets, indicating they were wearing the helmets with radios.

"I had one for the first quarter of the game," Vrabel said. "Tried it out just to see how it worked. Well, I think there are some things we're going to have to work through. From (defensive coordinator A defensive coordinator typically refers to a coach on a football team in the National Football League or college football who is in charge of the defense. I'm sure we'll work again with it (tomorrow)."

Belichick said he wasn't sure if the team would use the headsets in the preseason finale tomorrow night against the Giants, or if they'd have the same players wear them. Patriots regulars usually don't play in the final preseason game.

"I think it's a learning experience for everyone," Belichick said. "We know more about it now and at least have a game under our belts to try to figure out what is the best way to utilize it."
