Rear Adm. John D. Butler John D. Butler (born August 4, 1915) is a former American Republican politician from California.

John Butler was born 1915 in San Diego. He played football at San Diego State and was named an All-American. He was a trial lawyer. During World War II he served as a Navy pilot.
 is being assigned as program executive officer for submarines in the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy Assistant Secretary of the Navy (abbrev. "ASN") is the title given to certain senior officials in the U.S. Department of the Navy. They serve as chief assistants to the Secretary of the Navy (SECNAV).  for Research, Development and Acquisition. Butler was deputy commander for undersea technology, SEA-93, in the Naval Sea Systems Command The Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) is the largest of the U.S. Navy's five "systems commands," or materiel organizations. NAVSEA consists of four shipyards, eight "warfare centers" (two undersea and six surface), four major shipbuilding locations and the NAVSEA headquarters,  and commander of the Naval Undersea Warfare Center The Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC) is the United States Navy's full-spectrum research, development, test and evaluation, engineering and fleet support center for submarines, autonomous underwater systems, and offensive and defensive weapons systems associated with , at Newport, RI.

Rear Adm. William G. Timme will replace Butler as deputy commander for undersea warfare, and commander of the undersea warfare center. Timme was program manager for undersea weapons and program executive officer for submarines.

Rear Adm. Garry E. Hall is being assigned as assistant chief of staff for Operations, Intelligence and Exercises, East Atlantic and Allied Naval Forces North. Hall was executive assistant to the commander of the Naval Air Force in the U.S. Pacific Fleet.
