"), using Commander Decision(TM) with TM1. The system provides multidimensional views Looking at data in several dimensions; for example, sales by region, sales by sales rep, sales by product category, sales by month, etc. Such capability is provided in numerous decision support applications under various function names.  of health service costs compared to plan for BUMED's 98 medical centers around the world.

Karen Kinney, Computer Specialist and project team leader, NCTS, understood initially that multidimensionality was important to the application. Kinney had used Comshare software on previous projects, including an EIS (1) (Executive Information System) An information system that consolidates and summarizes ongoing transactions within the organization. It provides top management with all the information it requires at all times from internal and external sources.  for the Navy that has been deployed since 1989 and has over 200 users. "But the BUMED application was too complex and too slow to be practical using the multidimensional database See OLAP.  tools we initially tried," says Kinney. "Then we moved the model into Commander Decision with TM1, and it works very well. Response time is good, and that's very important to the users."

BUMED is responsible for funding Navy hospitals and setting their budgets. "The Comptroller is sponsoring this application, and he wants the users to be able to understand the detail 'right down to the deckplates' -- so the model is fairly large," says Kinney, "but most important, the model structure is very complex, requiring numerous roll-up hierarchies to provide all of the views they need to see. Because TM1 stores only the input data and calculates the model on demand, the storage requirements for our proof of concept were cut by more than a factor of 100," says Kinney. "And now that they have unlimited dimensions available, they'd like to see even more views of the data."

Due to the specific characteristics of the NTSC's application, TM1's memory-resident calculation-on-demand technology was critical to its success. Commander Decision, based on the Comshare Application Architecture (CAA Caa

), supports multiple underlying databases, so application developers can use the technology that best meets the requirements of their application.

The application NCTS prototyped for BUMED is planned to create a data mart for hands-on analysis of costs of medical services provided compared to plan, and will allow comparisons among different units. Planning is in process to deploy the system to comptrollers and their staffs at 98 sites throughout the world.
