Kids, as Well as Interest by Kids, Parents in Ethical, Legal Issues

Nick News, Nickelodeon's Emmy Award-winning newsmagazine for kids, will offer kids and their parents a discussion of the issues related to the investigation of President Clinton in Nick News Special Edition: The Clinton Crisis, to be telecast on Nickelodeon at a special time -- 9 p.m. ET/PT on Monday, September 28.

Host Linda Ellerbee will be joined by NBC News' Today co-anchor Katie Couric, judicial expert Reid Weingarten and an audience of kids for a half-hour examination of the investigation. The special will focus on: the historical impact situation; political and legal issues facing the President; the role the media has played in the investigation; and young people's interpretations of the unfolding White House events.

The special will utilize information taken from a national survey of kids (8-14 years old) and their parents conducted by Nickelodeon this past weekend (Sept. 18-20) in which both kids and parents indicated they were most interested in issues of honesty, loyalty to family, forgiveness, and such legal and procedural issues as impeachment impeachment, formal accusation issued by a legislature against a public official charged with crime or other serious misconduct. In a looser sense the term is sometimes applied also to the trial by the legislature that may follow. , perjury perjury (pûr`jərē), in criminal law, the act of willfully and knowingly stating a falsehood under oath or under affirmation in judicial or administrative proceedings.  and obstruction of justice A criminal offense that involves interference, through words or actions, with the proper operations of a court or officers of the court.

The integrity of the judicial system depends on the participants' acting honestly and without fear of reprisals.
. A separate release summarizing the findings of the survey will follow.

"When a news story becomes so pervasive that kids cannot avoid it, we try to explain it to them in a way they can understand and relate to," Ellerbee said. "The potential confusion and awkwardness resulting from the public access children have been given to sensitive information about the President was the catalyst for this special. We think we can offer kids and their parents a way to discuss these issues and reduce the anxiety level that kids may have about it."

The Clinton Crisis will explore how the American system The term American System can mean one of the following:

  • American System (economic plan), for the program of Henry Clay and the Whig Party.
of government works. The special will review the history of special prosecutor special prosecutor: see independent counsel.  Kenneth Starr's investigation of the President, beginning with Whitewater. It will also explain to kids the issues of perjury, obstruction of justice, impeachment, censure and resignation. Additionally, the special will examine the media's extensive coverage of the investigation; present a dialogue on ethics; and finally, a discussion among Ellerbee, the kids, Couric and Weingarten about what might happen next.
