, Inc., today announced that it has acquired the technology of ProxyMate (formerly available at www.proxymate.com), a Web privacy technology service from the Lucent Technologies' (NYSE NYSE

The acquisition will enable NaviPath(TM) to broaden the NaviOne Suite of private-label Internet access See how to access the Internet.  solutions and offer customers a leading set of Web privacy tools designed to protect users' identities online and inhibit receipt of e-mail "spam." Terms of the acquisition were not disclosed.

ProxyMate is based on underlying Lucent Personalized Web Assistant (LPWA LPWA Lucent Personalized Web Assistant

) technology, developed by the Bell Labs Information Sciences Center in 1997, which enables users to create aliases that protect their identities online. The technology was originally introduced at the Federal Trade Commission's Privacy Hearings in June of that year and has been highly regarded by consumer privacy advocates since the ProxyMate service launched last year.

"As more and more subscribers use the Internet for e-commerce and other personalized services, privacy protection emerges as a critical concern for many," said TC Browne, NaviPath's CEO (1) (Chief Executive Officer) The highest individual in command of an organization. Typically the president of the company, the CEO reports to the Chairman of the Board. . "By incorporating the ProxyMate tools into our facilities-based network, our NaviOne Solution Suite enables our customers to provide unique privacy capabilities to their online subscribers that will enhance customer loyalty through a safe, non-intrusive online experience."

"NaviPath offers customers an ideal set of solutions for using the Internet to improve their customer relationships, with the privacy tools being a great addition to the overall capabilities they provide," said Tom Uhlman, president of Lucent's New Ventures Group. "We're glad to be able to move this important Bell Labs technology into the commercial domain."

Several key features differentiate ProxyMate from other privacy offerings, including:

-- AutoFill - automatically fills out the user's name, password, e-mail and other information on Web sites that require this information. Users no longer have to remember user names and passwords to access these personalized sites, eliminating confusion and time-wasting frustration.

-- Alias creation - creates aliases when the user enters "\u" for user name, "\p" for password, or "\@" for e-mail address See Internet address.

and submits these aliases to Web sites requiring registration.

-- Privacy filtering -limits information which gets passed to Web sites, thereby allowing users to browse the Web anonymously.

-- Spam filtering tool - users can create multiple e-mail aliases that could be susceptible to spam and easily filter out mail to any of those aliases, while protecting their identities.

-- Email forwarding See e-mail forwarding.  - allows users to redirect aliased email to the actual email account email account email ncompte m (e-)mail  of their choice.

"The acquisition of this technology from Lucent enables us to quickly add privacy management capabilities to our list of services for end users. Because our privacy platform will be deployed throughout our network, rather than in a centralized cen·tral·ize

"We're pleased to see that the results of the ProxyMate market trial have led to a successful integration into a leading private-label Internet access solutions provider," said Michael Reiter, director of the Bell Labs Secure Systems Research Department. "The original LPWA technology was the result of innovative security research by Bell Labs that has successfully crossed the bridge into the commercial consumer Web arena."
