Natural MicroSystems ACELP/TDMA Vocoder and Realtime DSP Board Improve Speech Quality For Wireless Systems.

FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 10, 1997--

Integrated Solution Supports 24 Channels of Full Duplex Voice with

Echo Cancellation

Natural MicroSystems, the technology leader in Open Telecommunications, today announced the IS-641/ACELP Vocoder and the Alliance Generation Realtime 2 (AG-RT/2) daughterboard A printed circuit board that plugs into another printed circuit board, which plugs into the main board (motherboard). Daughterboards, also called "mezzanine cards," augment the capabilities of the card they plug into. See mezzanine card. , which together provide core technology to enable rapid development of highly scaleable and flexible TDMA-based wireless systems, including In-building Wireless, Wireless Local Loop, and PCS/cellular applications.

"Natural MicroSystems' new technologies will enable us to bring our advanced wireless PBX products to market quicker," said Dave Segbers, vice president of sales and marketing for ASTRONET Corporation. "By sharing the benefits of Natural MicroSystems' IS-641/ACELP vocoder and Alliance Generation Realtime/2 technology, we can pass along cost-effective, high-performance, flexible solutions to our wireless customers."

The AG Realtime/2 supports a variety of standard vocoder and echo cancellation algorithms that require higher MIPS (Million Instructions Per Second) The execution speed of a computer. For example, .5 MIPS is 500,000 instructions per second; 100 MIPS is a hundred million instructions per second.  and memory resources for realtime processing, including the G.723.1 vocoding algorithm, G.729A vocoding algorithm, IS-641 vocoder, and VoxWare's MetaVoice RT24.

The higher processing power of the AG-RT/2 enables multiple vocoder types to be run simultaneously on a single board. By processing these algorithms on a dedicated board and offloading these functions from the host computer's processor and memory, the AG-RT/2 enables applications using vocoding and echo cancellation to be much more scaleable than applications designed to process these algorithms on the host.

The IS-641 TRAU provides simultaneous operation of encoding and decoding for up to 24 IS-641 compatible enhanced full rate Enhanced Full Rate or EFR or GSM-EFR is a speech coding standard that was developed in order to improve the quite poor quality of GSM-Full Rate (FR) codec. Working at 12.2 kbit/s the EFR provides wirelike quality in any noise free and background noise conditions.  (full duplex) voice channels together with integrated echo cancellation. The vocoder and echo canceler are compliant with TIA (1) (Telecommunications Industry Association, Arlington, VA, www.tiaonline.org) A membership organization founded in 1988 that sets telecommunications standards worldwide. It was originally an EIA working group that was spun off and merged with the U.S.  IS-641 (vocoder) and applicable portions of TIA IS-136 (echo cancellation). Echo cancellation is implemented using a G.165 echo canceler.

Application developers access the IS-641 TRAU at runtime via calls to the Natural MicroSystems TRAU API. These API extensions to Natural MicroSystems' CT Access development environment include TRAU functions for: enabling and disabling channels, echo cancellation control, and status and diagnostics. Status and diagnostics include functions for loading and unloading program algorithms, determining status for individual channels, and channel initialization.

IS-641 (ACELP) is the enhanced full rate vocoder used in TDMA/IS-136 wireless systems. TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) A satellite and cellular phone technology that interleaves multiple digital signals onto a single high-speed channel. For cellular, TDMA triples the capacity of the original analog method (FDMA).  is widely recognized as the preferred technology for transitioning AMPS (analog) systems to digital systems as it allows the AMPS and TDMA networks to co-exist, providing all the usual digital benefits such as improved sound quality, more efficient spectrum usage, and enhanced features. In addition, TDMA is designed to permit integrated in-building wireless services. ACELP is now completely replacing the original VSELP VSELP Vector Sum Excited Linear Predictive  vocoder because it offers improved sound quality with only a minimal increase in terminal (handset) cost.

Natural MicroSystems' ACELP solution is available now. Pricing for 24 channels of ACELP vocoding in a single slot is $5,695 (list), including the AG8 DSP board, Realtime/2 daughtercard See daughterboard.
