National role for Cancer Nurses' Section.

Formal links between NZNO's Cancer Nurses' Section and the Ministry of Health, particularly in relation to the Government's Cancer Control Strategy, were established during a meeting in February. The meeting in Wellington also aimed to strengthen the section's national role in policy development.

Ministry staff who attended the meeting included principal adviser cancer control John Childs John Childs may be:

Ministry staff were interested to know what our section can provide, especially as our members include over 600 nurses working throughout New Zealland and in all areas of cancer care. Childs endorsed the section as a key stakeholder stakeholder n. a person having in his/her possession (holding) money or property in which he/she has no interest, right or title, awaiting the outcome of a dispute between two or more claimants to the money or property.  as identified in the Cancer Control Strategy Action plan (2005-2010). One of our key roles, he said, would be in the soon-to-be-established regional cancer networks (based on the United Kingdom model), which are expected to provide a better foundation for a multi-disciplinary team approach to cancer care. Initial work includes producing a background document on the workings of multidisciplinary mul·ti·dis·ci·pli·nar·y

Proposed future work includes increasing national collaboration through the establishment of a web-based system where treatment guidelines guidelines,

, protocols and standards can be shared nationally. An example offered included access and referral guidelines for GPs seeing patients diagnosed with cancer. This is intended to help address current disparities in accessing services that many people with cancer experience. Committee members highlighted concerns and implications surrounding limited national education currently available for cancer nurses, due to a lack of Clinical Training Agency funding, and access and availability of specific postgraduate postgraduate

All those at the meeting expressed a clear commitment to move forward and consolidate our links. Further meetings are planned to strengthen these.
