Healthy individuals who are at least 17 years of age are encouraged to give the gift of life. (Donors who have celebrated their 76th birthday must provide the Blood Bank with annual, written permission from their physician.) All prospective donors should be free of infections or illness, weigh at least 100 pounds and not be at risk for AIDS or hepatitis hepatitis (hĕp'ətī`tĭs), inflammation of the liver. There are many types of hepatitis. Causes include viruses, toxic chemicals, alcohol consumption, parasites and bacteria, and certain drugs. . While helping patients, donors receive a free mini-physical. Donating blood takes about one hour and gives someone a lifetime.
