NRPA's Mission: To advance parks, recreation and environmental conservation efforts that enhance the quality of life for all people.

History: NRPA's heritage and philosophy are an outgrowth of pioneering work by its predecessors-the American American, river, 30 mi (48 km) long, rising in N central Calif. in the Sierra Nevada and flowing SW into the Sacramento River at Sacramento. The discovery of gold at Sutter's Mill (see Sutter, John Augustus) along the river in 1848 led to the California gold rush of  Institute of Park Executives (1898), the National Recreation Association (1906), the National Conference on State Parks (1921), and the American Recreation Society (1937). The Recreation and Park Hall of Fame recognizes individuals who have made outstanding and lasting contributions to the advancement of recreation and parks in the United States. The Hall of Fame, which was initiated by the Joseph Lee Memorial Library Committee, is jointly sponsored by NRPA and the American Academy The American Academy in Berlin is a non-partisan academic institution in Berlin. It was founded in September 1994 by a group of prominent Americans and Germans, among them Richard Holbrooke, Henry Kissinger, Richard von Weizsäcker, Fritz Stern and Otto Graf Lambsdorff and opened in  of Park and Recreation Administration and supported by the National Recreation Foundation.

    Pool Cool--POOL COOL is a sun safety program especially designed for use at swimming pools. Its main objective is to increase awareness, motivation, and sun protection practices among children ages 5-10 who take swimming lessons, their parents, aquatics staff, and other pool users.     * SeniorNet provides parks and recreation agencies with grants to develop computer centers for adults over 50. SeniorNet (www.seniornet.org) is the world's premier technology trainer and online community for senior citizens. Based in San Francisco San Francisco (săn frănsĭs`kō), city (1990 pop. 723,959), coextensive with San Francisco co., W Calif., on the tip of a peninsula between the Pacific Ocean and San Francisco Bay, which are connected by the strait known as the Golden  and founded in 1986, SeniorNet is a major international organization that has taught hundreds of thousands of older adults to use computers and the Interact and has enriched the lives of millions through its Web site.

    The Urban Youth Initiative was created to meet the needs of youth through motivation, encouragement, and incentives that support the parks and recreation profession in their daily service. Little League Baseball, Inc. has partnered with NRPA to assist the Urban Youth Initiative by implementing and expanding little league play in urban communities nationwide through our park and recreation agencies.

    NRPA's National Youth Congress Program consists of three phases, the Town Hall Forum, Youth Action Councils (Partnership with the Points of Light Foundation and the Prudential Prudential is the name of two different companies and buildings named after them:

    Totally Cool, Totally Arts is a national model program toolkit for recreation professionals. It provides a way to encourage youth to express their creativity through the arts.

    The Ready for Life program is coordinated through the KERA to make a difference in the lives of children up to five years old by providing parents, caregivers and the community with information about early childhood development research in useful and enjoyable ways. NRPA will help introduce these parenting workshops to communities of Latino families by building the relationship between community based organizations and this foundation.
