Seeking to change consumers' attitudes about the public health dangers of pests, the National Pest Management Association The National Pest Management Association (NPMA), a non-profit organization with more than 5,000 members, was established in 1933 to support the professional pest control industry’s commitment to the protection of public health, food and property, reflected both in the  (NPMA NPMA National Pest Management Association

"This public service message and other educational materials we provide seek to communicate to the public the dangers associated with common pests and the diseases they transmit, and to encourage them to take action," explained NPMA Public Affairs Director Cindy Mannes.

Mannes cited a recent theory posed by Hong Kong Deputy Director of Health Leung Pakyin that cockroaches may be connected to the spread of the new Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) Definition

Severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) is the first emergent and highly transmissible viral disease to appear during the twenty-first century.
(SARS). "Historically, cockroaches have spread diseases such as pneumonia, samonella and food poisoning. There is no question that pests including the cockroach cockroach or roach, name applied to approximately 3,500 species of flat-bodied, oval insects forming the order Blattodea. Cockroaches have long antennae, long legs adapted to running, and a flat extension of the upper body wall that conceals the , are considered to be public health threats," said Mannes. "Unfortunately, very few of us are actually doing something to control them."

A recent pest control industry survey revealed that while Americans are concerned with pests like mosquitoes and cockroaches, and express fear of such pest-borne illnesses as West Nile Virus, a mere 36 percent of the respondents of the survey indicated they were actually doing anything to protect their families and properties.

The public service announcement directs viewers to the NPMA website, www.pestworld.org, where visitors can find more information about pests and how to control them, as well as locate a pest control professional in their community.

The NPMA, a non-profit organization with more than 6,000 members, was established in 1933 to support the pest management industry's commitment to the protection of public health, food and property, reflected both in the continuing education of the pest control professional and the dissemination of timely information to homeowners and businesses.
