The same study revealed that park visitors in 2005 spent about $37 per party per day by locals on day trips, and $236 per party by visitors with overnight accommodations. While over night visitors accounted for only 25 percent of park patrons, they were responsible for 53 percent of all spending.

In addition, NPS was responsible for the employment of 24,000 people in fiscal year 2005, returning about $1.7 billion to the economy.

The study was requested by NPS director Fran Mainella and was conducted by Texas A&M social scientist Dr. James Gramann, the Visiting Chief Social Scientist for the park service.
