 director Fran Mainella has announced the appointment of Donald W. Murphy to the position of deputy director.

"I am excited that Don has accepted the position of deputy director with the National Park Service," said Mainella. "He is a proven manager whose leadership skills will be a great asset to the National Park Service and will quickly be appreciated for the abilities he brings to this position," she said.

Murphy has served as the director of the Department of Parks and Recreation for the City of Sacramento, California “Sacramento” redirects here. For other uses, see Sacramento (disambiguation).
Sacramento is the capital of the State of California and the county seat of Sacramento County.

He was director of the California Department of Parks and Recreation The California Department of Parks and Recreation manages the California state parks system, which contains 280 parks and 1.4 million acres (5,700 km²), with over 280 miles of coastline; 625 miles of lake and river frontage; nearly 15,000 campsites; and 3,000 miles of hiking,  from 1991-1997, where he managed a $200 million budget. Previously, Murphy was the president of the Hearst Castle
Not to be confused with Hurst Castle, Henry VIII's Device Fort near Portsmouth in the United Kingdom.


Hearst Castle was the palatial estate of newspaper magnate William Randolph Hearst.
 Preservation Foundation, and has been the district superintendent in a number of locations including the Big Sur district and the Chino Chino (chē`nō), city (1990 pop. 59,682), San Bernardino co., S Calif.; founded 1887, inc. 1910. It is the business and processing center of a diversified farming (notably dairying) area.  Hills district.

As deputy director of the NPS, Murphy will assist in managing 385 national park units, which have a total budget of over $2.4 billion and cover approximately 84 million acres.
