National Park Service names National Heritage Areas.National Park Service Director Mary Bomar recently announced the establishment of l0 National Heritage Areas that span 15 states. The new sites join 27 existing National Heritage Areas throughout the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. . "National Heritage Areas are wonderful examples of cooperative conservation," said Bomar. "These areas encourage citizens, government agencies, non-profit groups and private partners to work together to plan and implement strategies to recognize, preserve, and celebrate many of America's defining landscapes." The peak is 940 feet (287m) above sea level, rising 180 feet (55m) above Arabia Lake reservoir.
