National Instruments Announces the 20th Anniversary Edition of LabVIEW; LabVIEW 8.20 Delivers General Compatibility with The MathWorks, Inc. MATLAB(R) Software, FPGA-Based Rapid System Prototyping and New Modulation Toolkit.

AUSTIN, Texas -- National Instruments National Instruments, or NI (NASDAQ: NATI), is an American company with over 4,000 employees and direct operations in 41 countries founded in 1976 by Dr. James Truchard, Bill Nowlin and Jeff Kodosky.  (Nasdaq:NATI NATI National Association of Teen Institutes
NATI Newfoundland Association of Technical Industries
), a global leader in virtual instrumentation, today announced NI LabVIEW 8.20 (www.ni.com/labview), the 20th anniversary edition of the LabVIEW graphical system design Graphical system design is a modern approach to designing, prototyping, and deploying embedded systems that combines open graphical programming with COTS hardware to dramatically simplify development, resulting in higher-quality designs with a migration to custom design.  platform for test, control and embedded system development. The LabVIEW anniversary edition introduces powerful new features including general compatibility with The MathWorks, Inc. MATLAB (MATrix LABoratory) A programming language for technical computing from The MathWorks, Natick, MA (www.mathworks.com). Used for a wide variety of scientific and engineering calculations, especially for automatic control and signal processing, MATLAB runs on Windows, Mac and (R) software, new FPGA-based custom hardware design wizards for building industrial controllers and updates to the NI Modulation Toolkit for LabVIEW so engineers can develop models to simulate communications systems and evaluate parameter and design decisions.

Open and Integrated Design Platform

LabVIEW 8.20 delivers an open design platform that embraces multiple design tools and uses powerful, custom measurement capabilities to streamline product development. With LabVIEW 8.20, engineers can:

--Use MathScript (www.ni.com/mathscript) to integrate m-file scripts they created using the MATLAB development environment

--Create custom data acquisition devices with the new LabVIEW FPGA (Field Programmable Gate Array) A type of gate array that is programmed in the field rather than in a semiconductor fab. Containing up to hundreds of thousands of gates, there are a variety of FPGA architectures on the market.  Wizard

--Integrate third-party plant models from Dynasim and Plexim GmbH with the LabVIEW Simulation Module, a tool for designing and implementing control simulation models

Single Software for Industrial Control, Measurement and Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs)

LabVIEW 8.20 enhances the industrial measurement capabilities of LabVIEW with new features designed for advanced analysis and control, improved distributed system management and new targets for HMIs. With the LabVIEW anniversary edition, engineers can:

--Add Windows CE-based HMIs to measurement and control systems with the LabVIEW Touch Panel Module

--Improve execution speeds of PID (1) (Process IDentifier) A temporary number assigned by the operating system to a process or service.

(2) (Proportional-Integral-Derivative) The most common control methodology in process control.
algorithms by up to 14 times with the LabVIEW PID Control Toolkit and execution speeds for advanced control algorithms by up to nine times with the LabVIEW Control Design Toolkit

--Build FPGA-based industrial measurement and control systems with the LabVIEW FPGA Wizard

--Create more than 2,000 shared variables or tags at a time to access I/O (Input/Output) The transfer of data between the CPU and a peripheral device. Every transfer is an output from one device and an input to another. See PC input/output.

I/O - Input/Output
with the LabVIEW Datalogging and Supervisory Control (DSC (1) (Digital Signal Controller) A microcontroller and DSP combined on the same chip. It adds the interrupt-driven capabilities normally associated with a microcontroller to a DSP, which typically functions as a continuous process. See microcontroller and DSP. ) Module

Intuitive Tools for Advanced, RF and Communications Design and Test Applications

LabVIEW 8.20 extends the LabVIEW platform with advanced test tools, including ones for RF and communications design, simulation and test, which engineers can use to more intuitively design models and develop measurement applications. With LabVIEW 8.20, engineers can:

--Use orthogonal frequency division multiplexing See FDM.

(communications) frequency division multiplexing - (FDM) The simultaneous transmission of multiple separate signals through a shared medium (such as a wire, optical fibre, or light beam) by modulating, at the transmitter, the separate signals into separable
(OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) A digital transmission technique that uses a large number of carriers spaced apart at slightly different frequencies. ) examples for Wi-Fi and 4G cellular applications with the NI Modulation Toolkit

--Prototype communications systems with the intermediate frequency reconfigurable I/O (IF-RIO) device

--Design and maintain large test systems with new object-oriented programming tools

--Create advanced user interfaces with OpenGL-based 3-D visualization

--Automatically generate interfaces for .NET Web services and DLLs with new wizards

LabVIEW 8.20 is available on Windows, Macintosh OS X and Linux(R) operating systems. The English language version of LabVIEW 8.20 launches in August 2006, and all other versions, with the exception of simplified Chinese, launch in September 2006. About National Instruments

For 30 years, National Instruments (www.ni.com) has been a technology pioneer and leader in virtual instrumentation. Leveraging PCs and commercial technologies, virtual instrumentation increases productivity and lowers costs for test, control and design applications through easy-to-integrate software, such as NI LabVIEW, and modular measurement and control hardware for PXI (PCI EXtensions for Instrumentation) A peripheral bus specialized for data acquisition and real time control systems. Introduced in 1997, PXI uses the CompactPCI 3U and 6U form factors and adds trigger lines, a local bus and other functions suited for measurement , PCI (1) (Payment Card Industry) See PCI DSS.

(2) (Peripheral Component Interconnect) The most widely used I/O bus (peripheral bus).
, PCI Express, USB USB
 in full Universal Serial Bus

Type of serial bus that allows peripheral devices (disks, modems, printers, digitizers, data gloves, etc.) to be easily connected to a computer.
