Sciences (NIAS) has succeeded in controlling the metamorphosis of silkworms. NIAS has developed a technique to produce genetically-modified silkworms using the silkworm genome information that it decoded last year.

Based on the new technique, NIAS has induced precocious metamorphosis of silkworms by excessively producing juvenile hormone esterase esterase /es·ter·ase/ (es´ter-as) any enzyme which catalyzes the hydrolysis of an ester into its alcohol and acid.

es·ter·ase
n.
Any of various enzymes that catalyze the hydrolysis of an ester.
, a kind of hormone-degrading enzyme.

NIAS expects that this achievement will lead to the development of innovative pesticides, which are insect-specific, selective and environmentally-friendly. Details of the achievement is available in the August 2 online version of Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America, usually referred to as PNAS, is the official journal of the United States National Academy of Sciences.  (PNAS) of the United States of America UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.
