National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Others Co-develop High-speed Fully Automated 2-D Electrophoresis System for Protein Analysis.

Tokyo, Japan, Sept 6, 2005 - (JCNN JCNN Japan Corporate News Network ) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (産業技術総合研究所  (AIST AIST Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan)
AIST National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan)
AIST Association for Iron & Steel Technology
) has developed a fully automated two-dimensional electrophoresis system in collaboration with the Tokyo University of Technology, Sharp, Toppan Printing and Astellas Pharma.

The new system, which fully automates all processes from isoelectric focusing to polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis
n.
A technique for determining the molecular weight of proteins, in which proteins that have been coated in an anionic detergent undergo electrophoresis in a polyacrylamide gel.
to detection, can perform two-dimensional electrophoresis of proteins in about one hour. The task usually takes about a day.

Also, the joint research group has successfully reduced in size the new system to a quarter the conventional 2-D electrophoresis system.

Going forward, AIST and the three partners will proceed with R&D with a view to applying the system to protein analysis to accelerate disease diagnosis, drug discovery and proteome analysis.

Details of these findings will be exhibited in a booth sponsored by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization at BioJapan 2005, which will be held in Yokohama from September 7 to 9.
