National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology, Osaka University Succeed in Creating Mesenchymal Stem Cell from Wisdom Tooth Germ.Tokyo, Japan, Mar 8, 2006 - (JCN JCN Japan Corporate News JCN Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience JCN Journal of Cardiovascular Nursing JCN Journal of Christian Nursing JCN Job Control Number JCN Journal of Child Neurology JCN joint communications network (US DoD) ) - The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (産業技術総合研究所 (AIST AIST Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan) AIST National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Japan) AIST Association for Iron & Steel Technology ) announced on March 7 that its Research Institute for Cell Engineering has established a method to creat a mesenchymal stem cell Mesenchymal stem cells or MSCs are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into a variety of cell types. Cell types that MSCs have been shown to differentiate into in vitro or in vivo include osteoblasts, chondrocytes, myocytes, adipocytes, and, as described lately, from tooth germs, in collaboration with Osaka University. The new method, which uses a special protease protease /pro·te·ase/ (pro´te-as) endopeptidase. pro·te·ase n. Any of various enzymes, including the proteinases and peptidases, that catalyze the hydrolytic breakdown of proteins. , can isolate a mesenchymal stem cell from tooth germs of extracted wisdom teeth. In in vitro experiments, the two partners differentiated and induced the isolated cells into bone, liver and nerves. Further, in mice experiments, they succeeded in regenerating bone tissues and liver using the isolated cells. These findings indicate that tooth germs, which are usually discarded after extraction, will be a promising material in the regenerative medicine. Details of the achievement will be presented at the 5th Annual Congress of the Japanese Society for Regenerative Medicine. Copyright [c] 2006 Japan Corporate News Network. All rights reserved. |
