National Grid Receives National Arbor Day Foundation Environmental Award for Fifth Consecutive Year.
For the fifth year in a row, the National Arbor Day Foundation has named National Grid's Massachusetts Electric Company, Narragansett Electric Company, Granite State Electric Company, Nantucket Electric Company and New England Power Company, Tree Line USA utilities for exemplary vegetation management.
New York-based Niagara Mohawk, a National Grid company, also earned the honor.
"We are pleased to again receive this distinction because it recognizes our continued commitment to the protection and enhancement of the environment," said Michael Jesanis, president and chief executive officer of National Grid. "Responsible tree trimming and planting also help to reduce the number of power outages our customers experience and help make the communities we serve safer places to live."
The Tree Line USA program, sponsored by The National Arbor Day Foundation in cooperation with the National Association of State Foresters, recognizes utilities that meet three requirements: a program of quality tree care, annual worker training in quality tree-care practices, and a tree planting and public education program.
The National Grid companies were among utilities nationwide honored with the Tree Line USA award on April 19 at the annual Trees and Utilities National Conference in Omaha, Neb.
"Everyone benefits from responsible, informed tree care," said John Rosenow, the National Arbor Day Foundation's president. "National Grid is to be commended for the commitment that has led to Tree Line recognition for the past five years."
The National Arbor Day Foundation, a nonprofit education organization, is dedicated to tree planting and environmental stewardship.
National Grid's core business is the transmission and distribution of electricity. Its electricity delivery network includes 12,000 miles of transmission lines and 72,000 miles of distribution lines. The company also has subsidiaries engaged in natural gas distribution.
