Certified Professional of Food Safety (CP-FS) Review Course [formerly known as the Certified Food Safety Professional (CFSP)]

This one-day refresher course is designed to enhance your preparation for the CP-FS exam. The course will cover exam content areas. Participants are expected to have some level of preparation prior to the review course. You will be able to question the instructor who has many years of experience in the food safety and protection field. Cost is $349 for members and $449 for nonmembers. Certified Installer of Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems (CIOWTS) Basic and Advanced Level Exams

As a professional installer, NEHA would like to give you this opportunity to set yourself apart from your professional colleagues and get the recognition you deserve for your quality work and knowledge. NEHA, through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and various partner groups, has developed a national credential to certify installers of onsite wastewater treatment systems. These credentials cover all forms of installation and are offered at both a basic and advanced level. Cost for the basic level exam is $95 for NEHA/NOWRA members and $110 for nonmembers. Cost for the advanced level exam is $110 for NEHA/NOWRA members and $130 for nonmembers. Limit 50 people per exam.

KEYNOTE SESSION

A Discussion Within the Profession: Who Are We and Who Do We Want To Be?!

This year's AEC & Exhibition keynote will be unlike any that NEHA has ever presented. We are billing it as a "Discussion within the Profession." The keynote will feature a panel of highly-respected environmental health professionals who were specifically asked to participate on this panel by NEHA's president, Rob Blake. They have been charged with engaging the audience on the topic of who are we and who do we want to be.

To understand the significance of the keynote and what it means to the environmental health profession, it is instructive to go back to the time of the creation of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Many NEHA members well remember the transfer of many environmental health programs from public health institutions to the newly created EPA. To some, these changes amounted to nothing more than programmatic transfers from one institution to another. To many others, however, these transfers redefined and even diminished what environmental health was.

Today we appear to be facing a situation that looks eerily similar to the situation that existed just before the EPA was created. Before the EPA was created, enormous interest had developed for a new and heightened initiative on behalf of environmental protection. Today, change the words environmental protection to food safety and the situation looks like an instant replay of the late 60's. Moreover, serious talk is taking place about the creation of a new Food Protection Agency (FPA)--in the mold of the EPA.

If this institutional change takes place and a new federal FPA is established (along with state counterparts), what will happen to the identity of environmental health? Will the issue of food safety dissolve out of environmental health like air and water pollution did in the 70's? What will remain of environmental health? What are the implications of such a change for local public health departments--which almost all sponsor major food protection programs.

As this issue unfolds, environmental health finds itself in an odd position. We have never really worked to build a consensus within the profession to define what environmental health is. Therefore, we really can't join this debate because we have no programmatic definition of environmental health to advocate for.

NEHA recognizes that the discussions about an FPA have implications for many who practice environmental health--even if they work within another topical area. If for example, an EH professional is working in onsite wastewater, it may appear that whatever happens to food safety is irrelevant. However, if losing food safety to a different agency threatens the existence of the very department that the onsite professional works at, a tremendous impact is obviously possible.

NEHA believes that this discussion within the profession is long overdue. NEHA also believes that it is crucial that this discussion be held before any action to create a new institutional structure for food safety is built. That discussion is what this year's keynote session is all about.

The keynote will consist of a panel that will be chaired by Rob Blake, NEHA's president. It will be devoted to an exploration of this issue with ample audience participation.

In this tabletop exercise, attendees will be taken through a visual home visit walk-through, perform an assessment, and break into groups to discuss their findings. The Environmental Public Health Performance Standards (EnvPHPS), built upon the 10 essential environmental health services, are viewed as the primary tool for strengthening the nation's environmental public health infrastructure. Endorsed by several national agencies and professional associations, they are being used to build capacity, consistency, and accountability within and across the nation's environmental public health system. Through this hands-on workshop, participants will have the early opportunity to pursue national excellence by implementing these standards at their own agencies. Attendees will learn about the standards and their application to day-to-day activities, complete the agency self-assessment instrument, identify their own agency capacity gaps, and learn about and share best practices aimed at improving program capacity. Participants will leave with an action plan to address gaps, and an ongoing evaluation plan. By participating, attendees will also be assisting with building an accurate picture of the nation's environmental public health infrastructure, and providing information on how best to focus capacity-building resources. GUIDANCE ON MOISTURE AND MOLD: A WORKSHOP FOR ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH PROFESSIONALS AND HEALTH PROVIDERS

Environmental health professionals and health providers are faced with a rapidly growing number of concerned individuals troubled by mold and moisture in their homes, schools, and work environments. Moisture and mold growing in these environments, and the potential consequence of exposure on health, pose complex concerns. The Center for Indoor Environments and Health at the University of Connecticut Health Center is pleased to offer this one-day, interactive workshop combining presentations and small group exercises to provide attendees with knowledge and tools to explore, respond to, intervene upon, and communicate about mold and moisture.

Parallel workshop segments will focus on the unique needs of health providers and environmental health professionals. All attendees will take part in a review of current information on health effects and exposure to mold and moisture, will be given guidance on how to evaluate environmental information, and will explore communication strategies. Specifically, environmental health professionals will acquire skills on how to assess and remediate environments. They will also learn about building science principles, moisture control strategies, and intervention approaches. Health providers will learn how to assess symptoms and illnesses that may have environmental components and learn how to use technical data and reports to evaluate their patients' possible exposure to moisture and mold. NEHA believes that protecting our natural environment is critical to the health and prosperity of our communities and country. Check out the following examples of ways NEHA is continuing to take strides in making our 2008 AEC & Exhibition a more "Green" event:

NEHA Initiatives

** NEW! NEHA has added an educational track for sustainability at the 2008 conference

** NEW! NEHA will present the first-ever Award for Excellence in Sustainability

** On-line registration available, which saves paper

** Attendees will be able to purchase carbon offsets at the conference. The dollars will be given to Terrapass to fund clean energy and other projects to help reduce carbon emmissions.

** Local, organic food served as much as possible

** Reduce the amount of paper used, including handouts and conference materials

** Recycling and re-use efforts

** Conference bags made from natural and biodegradable materials. These bags are perfect for re-use after the conference. Use the bag when you go grocery shopping, as a lunch tote or workout bag, or to carry around items for work. There are so many uses! Thank you to NSF for their sponsorship of the conference bag.

** Golf course uses effluent water
