In recognition of the contributions made by service members in response to the 11 September 2001 terrorist attacks on the U.S. and ongoing operations against the terrorist threat, Executive Order 10448 authorized members of the U.S. armed forces on active duty on or after 11 September 2001 to be awarded the National Defense Service Medal The National Defense Service Medal is a military decoration of the United States military originally commissioned by President Dwight D. Eisenhower. Created in 1953, the National Defense Service Medal was intended to be a “blanket campaign medal” awarded to any member . A closing date is yet to be determined. The medal was previously issued for service during the Korean War Korean War, conflict between Communist and non-Communist forces in Korea from June 25, 1950, to July 27, 1953.
