National Children's Study receives more funding.


In February 2007 Congress earmarked $69 million for the National Children's Study The National Children’s Study (NCS) will examine the effects of environmental influences on the health and development of more than 100,000 children across the United States, following them from before birth until age 21. . These funds will expand the study by 15 to 20 new study centers and will allow the 7 existing centers to begin recruitment. The study, under the auspices of a coalition of federal agencies, will eventually include 100,000 children from a total of 105 communities across the United States United States, officially United States of America, republic (2005 est. pop. 295,734,000), 3,539,227 sq mi (9,166,598 sq km), North America. The United States is the world's third largest country in population and the fourth largest country in area. , following the children from before birth until age 21. Study researchers will focus on a wide range of health issues including birth defects birth defects, abnormalities in physical or mental structure or function that are present at birth. They range from minor to seriously deforming or life-threatening. A major defect of some type occurs in approximately 3% of all births. , asthma, obesity, behavior, and environmental and dietary impacts on health.
