). Dr. Bowers was elected for his contributions to the development of high-speed semiconductor lasers and other optical devices for optical switching and communications systems.

"The National Academy of Engineering is honored to have Dr. Bowers as a member," stated Dr. Dale Compton, Home Secretary of the NAE. "His expertise will enhance the capabilities of the Academy to provide advice to the government on a wide range of technical issues."

"Telecommunications is changing rapidly with great impact on our society and the way we live," said Dr. Bowers. "There are a lot of societal issues that are addressed by the Academy, and with the proper encouragement, we can greatly increase the bandwidth delivered to the average user without costing any more money."

Co-founder of Calient Networks, Dr. Bowers is also director of the Multidisciplinary Optical Switching Technology Center and professor of physics at the University of California, Santa Barbara History

About the National Academy of Engineers (NAE)

The NAE was established in 1964 as an independent, nonprofit organization Nonprofit Organization

An association that is given tax-free status. Donations to a non-profit organization are often tax deductible as well.

), the operating arm of the two academies. In a typical year, more than 900 NRC study committees are in operation. The NAE also conducts an independent study program using its own funds. These studies address important topics in engineering and technology that have significant economic and social implications. In recent years the work has focused on establishing a balance between economic growth and environmental protection; ensuring national prosperity in era of global economic and technological interdependence; and supporting an education system that can provide a literate, well-trained workforce.
