NatWest's new configuration includes 16 top-of-the-range NonStop Himalaya K10000 massively parallel commercial servers and more than 40 mid-range Himalaya K1000 servers. These systems, which replace existing older Tandem VLX and CLX technology, form a strategic part of NatWest Group's information technology plans to combine three data centers to two, both located outside of London.

NatWest Group IT runs a variety of applications on the Tandem platform, including its S.W.I.F.T. (Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications (SWIFT)

The Himalaya range of massively parallel processors was introduced in July 1993 and enhanced in January of 1995 as part of Tandem's ongoing strategy to provide high-performing, continuously available computing at a low cost.

The entire range of servers have proved enormously successful and last year set a world-record for the number of transactions-per-minute using the Transaction Processing Council's TPC-C A benchmark that measures overall transaction processing performance. See TPC.  price/performance benchmark.

"We have enjoyed excellent support from Tandem over the many years we have worked with the company," said Stewart Legg, general manager of NatWest Group IT. "The progress Tandem has made in delivering the benefits of its systems at a low cost was a major influencing factor in our recent decision -- which confirms Tandem as a major supplier of computer systems to our company."

"This purchase not only reaffirms Tandem's long-term relationship with NatWest Group IT, but also confirms that the strategy to offer Tandem's traditional benefits at a lower cost was important," said Roger Bellass, Tandem UK's managing director.

"The success we've been experiencing with both new and existing customers clearly show how Tandem's latest solutions have allowed the advantages of continuous availability to be brought to bear in all areas of business and commerce.

"This, combined with Tandem's strengths in other rapidly growing markets such as parallel processing and decision support, our continuing drive to lower the cost of our systems, and the renewed commitment of key customers such as NatWest Group IT, places Tandem in an ideal position for the future."
