and postsurgical nasal packing containing 100% calcium alginate alginate /al·gi·nate/ (al´ji-nat) a salt of alginic acid; water-soluble alginates are useful as materials for dental impressions.  derived from seaweed. The ENTaxis material gels and expands to conform to the anatomy of the nasal cavity, comfortably applying uniform pressure to the lesion. Through activation of platelet aggregation, ENTaxis accelerates the coagulation coagulation (kōăg'ylā`shən), the collecting into a mass of minute particles of a solid dispersed throughout a liquid (a sol), usually followed by the precipitation or  process, maintaining a moist environment while trapping bacteria and wicking secretions from the site.

Insertion of ENTaxis is pain-free and the packing is easily separated from underlying tissues, minimizing the possibility of rebleeding. ENTaxis is hypoallergenic and has natural antimicrobial qualities. Studies have shown that this product does not promote the growth of Staphylococcus aureus strains associated with toxic shock syndrome toxic shock syndrome (TSS). acute, sometimes fatal, disease characterized by high fever, nausea, diarrhea, lethargy, blotchy rash, and sudden drop in blood pressure. It is caused by Staphylococcus aureus, an exotoxin-producing bacteria (see toxin). .
