Napa Valley's Sixth Annual Computers & Electronics Recycling Event Collects More Than 179 Tons of e-Waste; Local Residents & Businesses Turn Out in Droves to Help Napa Lead the Way in Electronic Recycling.

NAPA, Calif. -- The City and County of Napa and its residents scored a major triumph in the battle against accumulated e-waste last month with a two-day event that rounded up more than 179 tons of unwanted computer monitors, televisions, cell phones and other electronic junk.

Partnering with Electronic Recyclers, the Fresno-headquartered largest recycler of electronic waste in the state of California, the City of Napa announced this week its total numbers for the free Countywide public collection event, staged at the Napa Valley Napa Valley, Calif.: see under Napa.

Within the course of two days, hundreds of Napa area residents, businesses and students arrived at the collection site with their unwanted and/or non-functioning computer monitors, computers, printers, TVs and other electronic waste.

"We are thrilled with the success of this event and excited about forging this partnership with the City of Napa in general," said John S. "It is a true testament to the growing need for organized electronic waste drop-off sites around California - and the people of Napa have set the bar particularly high."

Napa's annual electronic recycling event has become so popular that it has established itself as the single largest electronic waste collection event of its kind (on a per capita basis) in California.

At this year's event, local organization Napa Recycling & Waste Services (NRWS NRWS Northern Rough-Winged Swallow (bird species Stelgidopteryx serripennis) ) handled off-loading, collection and packaging of materials while Electronic Recyclers, which recycles all of the toxic materials it collects at its own Fresno facility, handled shipping and processing for all of the electronic waste brought to the event.

All electronic components are 100% recycled and easily traceable using Electronic Recyclers' unique bar coded reports. That helps give the City and County of Napa confidence that the collected e-scrap is being tracked properly and does not become an environmental problem somewhere else in our world."

Miller also reported that over 10 tons of the total collected will support the reuse programs of the Computer Recycling Center (Computer Recycling Center, Inc., Santa Rosa, CA, www.crc.org) A non-profit organization that channels old computer equipment to schools and other non-profit organizations. Event sponsors included the City & County of Napa, the City of American Canyon, Napa Recycling & Waste Services, Upper Valley Waste Management Agency, the Napa Valley Personal Computer Users Group, Computer Recycling Center, Electronic Recyclers and Napa Valley College.

The accumulation of e-waste is a growing problem that has gained national attention. In California alone, hundreds of thousands of computers, monitors, televisions and other electronic items are replaced every year. Electronic waste contains materials that are valuable but can be hazardous if not disposed of properly. Electronic recycling helps to protect the environment and create new jobs.
