Nagasaki University Awarded Clinical Research Grant to Study Cell-Enhanced Reconstruction in HIV Therapy-Induced Facial Atrophy Using Celution(R) 800 System.

SAN DIEGO & NAGASAKI, Japan -- Nagasaki University will sponsor and perform a clinical study on the use of cell-enhanced reconstruction in HIV therapy-induced facial atrophy, a condition where adipose (fat) tissue becomes unevenly lost, leaving patients with a gaunt appearance. The study will be funded through a three year, 58.5 million yen grant (approx. U.S. $600,000), which was awarded to Nagasaki University by the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare. Cytori's research team will collaborate with Nagasaki University to optimize the treatment formulation prior to commencement of clinical research.

The need for this research is based upon increasing demand by patients with HIV seeking new options to restore their facial appearance after long-term use of potent protease inhibitor drugs. This represents an important unmet medical need, for which cell-enhanced reconstruction may provide a potential solution. Cell-enhanced reconstruction combines a patient's own stem and regenerative cells with their own fat tissue as a matrix.
