NYSEG TO DEVELOP NATURAL GAS STORAGE FACILITY

BINGHAMTON, N.Y., Oct. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- New York State Electric & Gas Corporation (NYSEG) (NYSE: NGE) today announced plans to develop the Seneca Lake Storage Project, a salt-cavern storage facility for natural gas, near Watkins Glen in south-central New York.
"This storage facility will improve reliability of service to our customers in the Binghamton and Elmira areas during times of high demand," said Russell Fleming, Jr., NYSEG's senior vice president-Gas Business Unit. "If for some reason the usual supply of natural gas is not sufficient to meet customer demand, we will be able to supplement it with natural gas from the storage project."
NYSEG will file an application later this year with the New York State Puc? Service Commission to construct and operate the facility.
When completed in late 1995, the Seneca Lake Storage Project will have a capacity of approximately 800 million cubic feet of natural gas, with a peak withdrawal rate of approximately 80 million cubic feet per day.
A four-mile long steel pipeline will connect the project to an existing natural gas transmission pipeline owned and operated by Columbia Gas Transmission Corporation.
NYSEG's wholly-owned subsidiary, NGE Enterprises, Inc., also announced plans to develop the Watkins Glen Storage Project, another natural gas storage facility, in partnership with ANR Storage Company of Detroit. ANR Storage is a subsidiary of The Coastal Corporation (NYSE: CGP), an energy holding company based in Houston.
