NYC school coach charged in bat attack

A high school baseball coach accused of attacking an opposing team's fans with a metal bat has been charged with assault.

Ernest Cruz, 34, a coach at Norman Thomas High School, allegedly attacked teenage fans at Fort Hamilton High School in Brooklyn on Tuesday after Norman Thomas won an exhibition game.

Cruz denied having a bat and said he and his team were heading to a bus when about 10 teens who had been hanging around a nearby handball court surrounded them.

"They pulled out bats. ... All I did was hold my kids back while (the other teens) were punching and kicking me," Cruz said.

He said he and his team drove off after the fight.

Injuries to two teens included a broken jaw and facial cuts.
