 in lower Manhattan Lower Manhattan is the southernmost part of the island of Manhattan, the main island and center of business and government of the City of New York. Lower Manhattan is generally defined as the area delineated on the north by Chambers Street, on the west by the Hudson River (North  has officially been declared a national monument by President Bush. More than 400 remains from the 17th to 18th centuries have been discovered at the site, dubbed the African Burial Ground. "Appointing this site as a national monument is important, because this is not just African American history African American history is the portion of American history that specifically discusses the African American or Black American ethnic group in the United States. Most African Americans are the descendants of African slaves held in the United States from 1619 to 1865. . This is American history," says Burial Ground public educator Patricia Leonard.
