The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation The New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation (HHC) operates the public hospitals and clinics in New York City. It was created in 1969 by the New York State Legislature as a public benefit corporation (Chapter 1016 of the Laws 1969).  awarded MKBEM Associates the contract to manage the construction and renovation of the Queens Hospital Center $400 million reconstruction project in Jamaica, Queens.

MKBEM Associates, a joint venture of Morrison-Knudsen Corporation, W.J. Barney Corporation, Endeco Group Ltd., and Munoz Engineering, P.C., are proceeding with pre-construction of this multi-phased project. The first major portion of construction will start in mid 1992 with overall completion in 1998.

Current plans included the major reconstruction of the existing Queens Hospital Center, a 551-bed acute care facility and construction of a new 305-bed long term care facility. The bed designations for the acute care hospital are: 218 medical/surgical, 18 medical intensive care, 8 surgical intensive care, 50 obstetric, 30 neonatal ICU ICU intensive care unit.

Queens Hospital Center is presently situated in 14 aging buildings on a 20-acre campus in Jamaica. The functions currently being provided in these buildings will be consolidated within the new facility.
