NYBC welcomes new transportation commissioner.

 Building Congress has applauded Mayor Michael Bloomberg's appointment of Janette Sadik-Khan as New York City New York City: see New York, city.

 Department of Transportation Commissioner.

"Having worked on transportation policy, financing and development in the private sector as well as in City and Federal government, she possesses exactly the right kind of experience for this important post," said New York Building Congress President Richard T. Anderson.

"At a time when the Mayor and other regional leaders are focusing on accommodating the present and future needs of a growing city, with transportation as a vital component, New York needs the leadership of committed and creative professionals such as Janette."

Sadik-Khan will oversee an agency with more than 4,400 employees and a budget of over $600 million per year, and will be responsible for managing much of the City's transportation infrastructure, including 5,800 miles of city streets and highways, 790 bridges and 6 tunnels.

DOT is responsible for installing and maintaining the 1.3 million city street signs, over 12,000 traffic signals, and 300,000 street lights. DOT fills over 200,000 potholes every year, installs and maintains 63,000 parking meters, and operates the Staten Island Ferry The Staten Island Ferry is a passenger ferry operated by the New York City Department of Transportation between Whitehall Street at the southernmost tip of Manhattan near Battery Park (South Ferry) and St.  which carries over 19 million passengers annually. Ms. Sadik-Kahn will officially assume her post on May 14th.

), Janette Sadik-Khan oversaw ten regional administrators and staff that were responsible for providing federal assistance to mass transit mass transit, public transportation systems designed to move large numbers of passengers. Types and Advantages


Mass transit refers to municipal or regional public shared transportation, such as buses, streetcars, and ferries, open to all on a

Most recently, Sadik-Khan served as senior vice president at Parsons Brinckerhoff Parsons Brinckerhoff (PB) is a planning, engineering, program and construction management organization. The company has been involved in planning and designing some of the world's largest public works projects, such as Boston's Big Dig, Britain's rail system Network Rail; , as their transit industry director.

She has also served as an associate administrator of budget and policy for the FTA, was a senior advisor to Mayor David Dinkins on mass transit issues, and served as special counsel to the Commissioner of New York City DOT.

Sadik-Khan graduated from Occidental College and Columbia University School of Law.
