Network Video Technologies (NVT) today announced that Treasure Island Resort & Casino in Red Wing, Minn., which offers one of the largest non-smoking casino areas in the Midwest, is using NVT's equipment to transmit video signals from an old surveillance room to a new one located 600 feet away via unshielded twisted pair (UTP) wire. NVT's transmitters, transceivers, receivers and hubs allow the use of new or existing unshielded twisted pair wire (UTP). This lets end-users and installers deliver a high-quality picture while simplifying system installation.

"Our goal when we selected the NVT products was to find the easiest -- and the best -- way to transmit about 650 video signals from the old surveillance room to a new surveillance viewing room," explains Sao Yang, Security Systems Maintenance Supervisor in the Surveillance Department at Treasure Island Resort & Casino. "We thought about running RG-59 coaxial cable but couldn't even imagine all the wires that we would have to pull."

In most video transmission applications, coaxial cable is more difficult

to install, resulting in higher labor costs. It is also less dependable because it is more susceptible to interference. Conversely, video signals transmitted using NVT's UTP solution remain noise free while transmitting over longer distances.

Yang looked into running twisted-pair Cat 5 (25-pair feeder cables) with the NVT transceiver setup, and hit on a winner. "When we calculated that a 25-pair feeder cable would require us to pull only 26 Cat 5 feeder cables versus the 650 individual wires on a RG-59 run, it made it an easy decision to choose the NVT transceiver and Cat 5 setup rather than the coax," Yang reports. After using the UTP system for the past two years, the results are clear. The casino is getting excellent picture quality with the NVT equipment.

Treasure Island's CCTV system includes a V1500 Vicon Matrix Switcher, along with the Primary Image Vision digital recording system. Its indoor/outdoor PTZ cameras are Vicon Surveyor 2000's and its fixed cameras are Panasonic for black-and-white and Sony for color.

"NVT is clearly one of the best when it comes to picture quality," Yang reports. "Another benefit we found when using the NVT transceiver was that the active hubs let us amplify the video signal. Some of the video signals that were running back to the new surveillance room were approximately 900 feet or more away."
