NVIDIA Elected to OpenGL Architecture Review Board; 3D Processor Company Dedicated to the Growth and Innovation of OpenGL Standards.

SANTA CLARA Santa Clara, city, Cuba
Santa Clara (sän`tä klä`rä), city (1994 est. pop. 217,000), capital of Villa Clara prov., central Cuba.
, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 23, 1998--Continuing its leadership support of industry standards, NVIDIA(tm) Corporation announced today that it has been elected to the OpenGL(tm) Architecture Review Board (ARB).

Following a vote by Silicon Graphics, Inc. and other members of the organization including, Compaq, Hewlett-Packard, Evans and Sutherland, IBM (International Business Machines Corporation, Armonk, NY, www.ibm.com) The world's largest computer company. IBM's product lines include the S/390 mainframes (zSeries), AS/400 midrange business systems (iSeries), RS/6000 workstations and servers (pSeries), Intel-based servers (xSeries) , Intel, Intergraph and Microsoft, NVIDIA was voted to help play a part in the ongoing definition of OpenGL.

"NVIDIA's selection to the OpenGL ARB reflects the strong growth of OpenGL within the mainstream PC market," said David Kirk

David Edward Kirk, MBE, (born 5 October 1961 in Wellington; grew up in Palmerston North) is a former New Zealand rugby player best known for having been the captain of the All
, chief scientist at NVIDIA. "In order to enable a stunning visual experience on the PC, NVIDIA is deeply committed to driving industry standards to include key 3D features, such as multitexturing with OpenGL 1.2.1."

"NVIDIA's RIVA TNT The RIVA TNT, codenamed NV4, is a 2D, video, and 3D graphics accelerator chip for PCs that was manufactured by NVIDIA. It was released in late 1998 and cemented NVIDIA's reputation as a worthy rival within the developing consumer 3D graphics adapter industry.  processor is the first high performance consumer desktop graphics accelerator A display adapter that performs a specialized set of graphics functions to render an image on screen. Today, all display adapters provide basic rendering functions in hardware, but many have graphics processing units (GPUs) that are sophisticated computers.  that does everything right without having to make bone headed compromises," said Brian Hook at id Software. "Joining the ARB emphasizes NVIDIA's support for OpenGL, which in turn reinforces our confidence in OpenGL's future in the consumer space."

"Kinetix is pleased to see the admission of NVIDIA to the OpenGL ARB," said Jimmy Giliberti, senior director of product development at Kinetix. "They have shown creativity and vision in their designs, and we look forward to their input into the OpenGL standard."

For over a year, NVIDIA has been an active participant in the effort to define and enhance OpenGL standards. In addition, NVIDIA announced a custom OpenGL Installable Client Driver (ICD ICD International Classification of Diseases (of the World Health Organization); intrauterine contraceptive device.

Available in separate client and server versions, it includes built-in networking and preemptive multitasking.  to complement its RIVA family of 3D processors.

OpenGL has always been the professional graphics standard for Unix and NT platforms, enabling high performance visualization in the entertainment, manufacturing, energy and medical markets. The proliferation of OpenGL into the PC space provides a new level of graphics capabilities to a broad market of 3D users.

About OpenGL, OpenGL ARB

OpenGL is the premier environment for developing 2D and 3D visual applications on systems ranging from consumer PCs to graphics workstations and supercomputers. With more than 60 hardware developer licensees, OpenGL has the broadest industry support of any openly licensed graphics API.

In 1992, Silicon Graphics formed an industry-wide ARB that now governs the evolution and ongoing development of OpenGL -- a technology originally created by Silicon Graphics -- as an open, platform-independent standard for professional-quality 3D graphics. The ARB's process of enhancing OpenGL includes evaluating extensions and determining which to incorporate and how they should be officially supported within the API.

Platforms supporting OpenGL include AIX (Advanced Interactive eXecutive) IBM's Unix-based operating system which runs on its Intellistation workstations and pSeries, p5, iSeries and i5 server families. (tm), BeOS(tm), HP/UX HP/UX Hewlett-Packard UNIX operating system
HP/UX Unexploded Human Particulate Operating System
, IRIX A Unix-based operating system from SGI that is used in its computer systems from desktop to supercomputer. It is an enhanced version of Unix System V Release 4. IRIX integrates the X Window system with OpenGL, creating the first real time 3D X environment. (R), LINUX, Mac(R) OS, OS/2(R), Microsoft Windows 9X and Windows NT, Solaris(TM) and many other operating systems. More information on OpenGL 1.2 and its supporters is made available on the OpenGL website at http://www.opengl.org.

NVIDIA RIVA Family

NVIDIA's RIVA family of 3D processors, the RIVA 128, RIVA 128ZX and the RIVA TNT, are 128-bit 3D processors which deliver a new level of performance to the mainstream PC market. By leveraging NVIDIA's graphics technology and massive gate counts, the RIVA processor family is designed to deliver stunningly realistic, high frame rate 3D, along with benchmark winning 2D, VGA (Video Graphics Array) The display standard for the PC. All PC display adapters support VGA, and Windows machines boot up in "VGA mode" before switching to higher resolutions.  and video acceleration all in single chip iterations. The RIVA processors are optimized for both Direct3D and OpenGL
