NUTRASWEET APPROVED FOR BAKING IN CANADA
DEERFIELD, Ill., May 5 /PRNewswire/ -- The NutraSweet Company

announced today that the sweetener aspartame, best known around the world as NutraSweet (R) brand sweetener, can now be used in baking applications in Canada. Canada's Health Protection Branch has amended its food additive regulations to permit the use of aspartame in a wide variety of bakery products and baking mixes such as cakes, cookies, pies, pastries and sweet rolls.
"This action by the Canadian health authorities opens up a new category of foods -- baked goods -- that can be sweetened with NutraSweet brand sweetener," said Larry Williams, president and chief operating officer, The NutraSweet Company. "In granting this approval, the Canadian government has once again affirmed the safety of aspartame."
The Canadian approval applies to aspartame that is formulated in a manner that protects it from the high temperatures associated with baking.
The NutraSweet Company is committed to working with its customers in developing food ingredient systems that reduce sugar and fat in foods and beverages and replace them with alternatives such as NutraSweet brand sweetener and Simplesse (R) all natural fat substitute.
The NutraSweet Company, headquartered in Deerfield, manufactures and markets NutraSweet (R) brand sweetener; EQUAL (R) brand tabletop sweetener with NutraSweet; NutraSweet (R) Spoonful (TM) sugar alternative; Simplesse (R) all natural fat substitute; and Simple Pleasures (R) Light frozen dairy dessert made with Simplesse. The company's newly introduced WellBridge (TM) Center, a fitness facility for adults over 45, brings to life the most recent discoveries in exercise, nutrition, and aging.
The NutraSweet Company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Monsanto Company (NYSE: MTC).
