LANCASTER -- With a critical need for more registered nurses, Antelope Valley College Antelope Valley College is a comprehensive community college located in Lancaster, California, USA. It is operated by the Antelope Valley Community College District, with a primary service area of 1,945 square miles covering portions of Los Angeles and Kern counties.  has been given a $512,787 state grant that should allow the school to get 38 more students through its associate-degree nursing program by June 2008.

Dr. Karen Cowell, dean of the college's Health Sciences Division, said the college has reached capacity in its nursing skills lab.

Thus, part of the money will pay for a modular building to house a lab, as well as pay the salaries of two full-time instructors.

``This spring, we used our lab from 6:50 in the morning till 9 o'clock at night, and eight hours on weekends,'' she said.

A new health sciences building that will provide room to expand the nursing program won't be open for several years.

That AVC was able to secure 5 percent of the $10 million grant program available statewide is a credit to the creativity of the proposal and support from area hospitals, according to according to

Cowell expressed hope that the state would continue to provide additional money for nursing education.

``We're hoping this won't be just a once-in-a-lifetime deal. We're hoping we'll be able to sustain this,'' she said.

Cowell added that any nurses interested in teaching part-time for the college should contact her at (661) 722-6404.
