In the combined second halves of this three starts, Cowan is 24 of 54 for 233 yards, two interceptions and no touchdowns. Particularly in the second half, Cowan looked like an unsure quarterback. ``It was spotty spot·ty adj. spot·ti·er, spot·ti·est 1. Lacking consistency; uneven. 2. The Bruins could use the boost Olson's return would offer, but are hardly ready to count on him. ``He's working his butt off,'' Svoboda said. ``He looks like he still has a ways to go, but he's trying to get back as fast as he can.'' Meanwhile, there is redshirt sophomore Cowan and all his numbers. ``This wasn't one of his best performances, that's for sure,'' said UCLA coach Karl Dorrell Karl Dorrell (born December 18, 1963 in Alameda, California) is the first black head coach in the history of the UCLA Bruins college football team, a position he took on December 18, 2002. . ``But it wasn't just him. There were a lot of circumstances. ``We didn't quite have the rhythm. We had some signs of doing some very positive things in the first half. In the second half, we did not. We tried to throw and give us some spark. We would complete a few and then make mistakes.'' Unable to move the ball, UCLA seldom had it. The Bruins had the ball for just 8:02 of the second half, compared to 21:58 for Washington State.
