``I wasn't sure who was going to get it but I didn't think I would,'' said Stephen. ``I hadn't practiced at all this year.''

Stephen said he prefers math problems that require more than one method to solve and believes that his past two years of competition helped with his win this year. He uses his math skills at home to help his younger siblings siblings npl (formal) → frères et sœurs mpl (de mêmes parents) .

``I'll just help if they ask. And if they just want answers, I won't help,'' said Stephen.

``I knew he had a really good chance at it. He's just an incredibly bright student. He's very well rounded,'' said Edwards coach Jason Burden, who co-coaches with Steve Stukas.

Winning the eighth-grade large school individual competition this year was Amber Archambo of New Vista Middle School. She plans on competing in the math team at Quartz Hill High School Quartz Hill High School is a public, co-educational high school located in Lancaster, California. Founded in 1964, it is the third oldest comprehensive high school in the Antelope Valley High School District (AVHSD).  next year.

``I really didn't think that I was even going to be in the top three,'' said a surprised Amber.

Mother Della Archambo was ecstatic.

``I new she had it in her,'' said Della. ``She loves math.''

The competition, drawing 122 teams from 26 middle schools, is held over three days for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders in the Palmdale High School gymnasium gymnasium

The competitors do math problems interspersed with games for 2 1/2 hours.

The Chuck Stoll Award began in 1997, named for the math teacher who founded the competition.

Sacred Heart The Sacred Heart is a religious devotion to Jesus' physical heart as the representation of the divine love for humanity

This devotion is predominantly used in the Roman Catholic Church and also used in the Anglican Church.
 eighth-grade teams came in first and sixth among the small schools, while New Vista eighth-grade teams took first and fourth places among the large schools.

Joe Walker Middle School finished second in the eighth-grade competition for large schools and Challenger finished third.

Edwards placed second and Ana Verde third for eighth grades from small schools.

In the seventh-grade competition, Amargosa Creek took first and third places and Ana Verde took second place among large schools. Sacred Heart took first, Edwards took second and Buena Vista took third place for the seventh-grade small-school competition.

Quail quail, common name for a variety of small game birds related to the partridge, pheasant, and more distantly to the grouse. There are three subfamilies in the quail family: the New World quails; the Old World quails and partridges; and the true pheasants and seafowls.  Valley won the small schools' sixth-grade competition with Sacred Heart taking second and Cimarron third place.

 teams finished first in the large schools' sixth-grade competition. Ocotillo placed second, while Edwards finished in third place.

Other individual winners were Carissa Hayes of Sacred Heart for small schools' sixth-graders; Freeman Butler of Joshua Hills for large schools' sixth-graders; C.T. Barnum of Edwards for small schools' seventh-graders; and Corinne Brierley of Amargosa Creek for large schools' seventh-graders.
