NTSB PROBING CRASH OF CESSNA ON SUNDAY.

Federal transportation officials were investigating what caused a private plane to crash into the parking lot of a fast-food restaurant, amazingly sparing the lives of its four occupants and people on the ground.

The pilot of the twin-engine Cessna Skymaster The Cessna Skymaster is a twin-engine civil utility aircraft built in a push-pull configuration. Instead of the engines being mounted on the wings, one is mounted on the nose and the other at the rear of the pod-style fuselage. , as well as one of his passengers, escaped the burning plane unhurt, while the other two passengers suffered minor injuries, FAA officials said.

National Transportation Safety Board officials were called in to investigate the crash, which happened just after 3 p.m. Sunday.

Kern Kern, river, 155 mi (249 km) long, rising in the S Sierra Nevada Mts., E Calif., and flowing south, then southwest to a reservoir in the extreme southern part of the San Joaquin valley. The river has Isabella Dam as its chief facility.  County Sheriff's Department officials said the plane experienced some sort of problem shortly after takeoff from the Mojave Airport. About a half-mile from the airport, the plane crashed into the parking lot, struck the side of a motel and then crossed over Sierra Highway Sierra Highway is a road in Southern California, United States. It runs from Tunnel Station near the north limit of the City of Los Angeles, where it intersects with San Fernando Road and Foothill Boulevard, as well as Interstate 5, and continues north to Mojave, mostly paralleling  before crashing into a brick wall.

The plane's occupants were identified as Amotz Frenkel, 68, of Thousand Oaks Thousand Oaks, residential city (1990 pop. 104,352), Ventura co., S Calif., in a farm area; inc. 1964. Avocados, citrus, vegetables, strawberries, and nursery products are grown. ; Yeuda Kam, 54, of Santa Monica Santa Monica (săn`tə mŏn`ĭkə), city (1990 pop. 86,905), Los Angeles co., S Calif., on Santa Monica Bay; inc. 1886. Tourism and retailing are important, and the city has motion-picture, biotechnology, and software industries. ; Avishai Knaan, 55, of Santa Monica; and Simon Katzman, 56, of Encino, sheriff's officials said.

All the occupants of the plane were able to escape the burning wreckage with minor to moderate injuries.
