NTS COOPERATES WITH IRS, FBI, STATES; HELPS STEM FUEL TAX EVASION AT TRUCK STOPS

LAS VEGAS, March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- NTS, Inc. of Fort Worth, Texas, one of the world's largest fuel management firms for the motor carrier industry, disclosed today it is providing "complete cooperation with federal and state authorities" to prevent fuel tax evasion at U.S. truck stops.
In a news conference at the Interstate Truckload Carriers Conference meeting here, Tommy L. Andrews, SVP-general manager, outlined the scope of the problem:
"According to the Internal Revenue Service, only half of all diesel fuel sold is taxed -- an estimated annual loss of $4 billion in state and federal tax revenues," Andrews emphasized. "It damages law-abiding diesel retailers and severely reduces the tax base to maintain the interstate highway system so critical to the nation's trucking industry."
NTS serves more than 8,000 carriers in North America through a network of about 3,000 NTS-affiliated truck stops. Last year, NTS funded the purchase of more than $1 billion in diesel fuel and related products. The company has been cooperating with industry organizations, state governments, the IRS and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, which has already raided some northeastern truck stops.
"We've been educating the authorities on identifying tax evasion tactics as well as providing them on-line access to NTS' Real-time Fuel Price Database," he stated. "We also are denying NTS membership to suspected tax evaders."
NTS, with more than 300 employees, primarily in Fort Worth, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of PHH Corporation (NYSE: PHH), Hunt Valley, Md. NTS services allow carrier clients to plan, monitor and control over- the-road expenditures through financial services, including card-based purchasing systems, fuel studies, network management and billing and reporting systems.
"We encourage fuel managers, other third party billing firms, truck stop and trucking organizations to join this cause," Andrews told the national trade press.
"NTS cares about the long-term health of the transportation industry. We believe we must support legitimate truck stop operations and continue to grow and maintain the U.S. highway system," he said. "That means fuel tax evaders should be pursued and prosecuted."
