For 2005 through 2006, the total investment is estimated to be in excess of $1 billion. In a few years, they will harvest the fruits of this investment, boosting their positions in ranking. Their overseas production was worth about $2.7 billion in 2004. But most Japanese makers have pulled out of North America. Kyosha closed its Mexican Mexican named after or originating in Mexico. But this number continues to decline. Photocircuits Corp. closed its Mexican operation in April 2005 and closed its Atlanta facility in June, keeping only a minor single-sided operation open. It seems that the number of PCB makers in Europe is now less than 400. In Korea, the owner of Korea Circuit decided to sell his shares in the Korea Circuit Group (which includes fast-growing flex maker Interflex) to rival flex maker Young Poong. Now Young Poong Group's PCB operations may produce an output of about $800 million for 2005. Asustek of Taiwan attempted to buy flex maker Flexium, but opposition by Kinsus's shareholders nixed the deal. Kinsus is a publicly traded IC substrate maker and its major shareholder is Asustek. In Taiwan, Unicap, Dowlentec and Shea May went down, and a few more are rumored to be sinking. But Taiwan did extremely well in 2004. Taiwan's 34 entries in the NTI 100 are still less than that of Japan, but twice as many as North America, the third most-represented region on the list. The number of entries from Taiwan will not see any substantial increase in the future, but their rankings will continue to climb as the top-tier makers are expanding aggressively in China. Production capacity of 3 million [ft.sup.2]/month is becoming the norm among top Taiwan makers operating in China. Taiwan's output in China is estimated to have been $2.8 billion in 2004, which corresponds to 35% of China's total production of $8.05 billion. SEMCO and Young Poong Group (YPG YPG Yards Per Game (football) YPG Yellow Pages Group (Canada) YPG Yuma Proving Ground (Arizona) YPG Young Pharmacists Group ) are now threatening the top positions held by three Japanese makers. Meet Your Maker TABLE 3 shows the number of PCB makers on the list from each region/country for 2004. Despite its declining share, North America still has 17 entries, thanks to overseas production. Of the 12 manufacturers from Europe, four were Germans. Of the 11 from Hong Kong/China, only two were "Chinese." The growth of flex makers in the last few years has been remarkable. Of the 138 total entries, 30 are flex makers. That is, 22% are "traditional" flex makers. IPC's TMRC TMRC - /tmerk'/ The Tech Model Railroad Club at MIT, one of the wellsprings of hacker culture. The 1959 "Dictionary of the TMRC Language" compiled by Peter Samson included several terms that became basics of the hackish vocabulary (see especially foo, mung, and frob). summary of 2004 world PCB production indicates that the flex production value was $5.47 billion and rigid-flex production was $973 million. Therefore, the total share of flex and rigid-flex in 2004 was 17%. So the 22% figure is in line with the share of flex and rigid-flex out of the total world production. Also, a number of traditional rigid board makers are engaged in flex manufacture-primarily cell phone makers. Flex was a niche product for a limited number of applications some time ago. Today, a variety of applications depend on flex, from flat-panel displays flat-pan·el display n. A thin lightweight video display used in laptop and notebook computers and employing liquid crystals, electroluminescence, or a similar alternative to cathode-ray tubes. Also called flat screen. to digital cameras. The rise of flex makers seems to reflect this trend. Nippon Mektron and Fujikura of Japan, Young Poong Group of Korea, Wearnes Group (MFS and M-Flex) of Singapore and 3M of the U.S. will be among the top PCB makers in 2005. Makers of cell phone boards using microvia technologies are in high positions on the list. Ibiden, Samsung Electro-Mechanics (SEMCO), Unimicron, CMK, Unitech, AT&S and Wus are good examples. Most flip-chip substrates are made using microvia technologies. Here, Ibiden, Shinko Denki, Nan Ya and Samsung are major makers of IC substrates using laser via technologies. Right now, many PCB makers in China are expanding existing plants and building new ones. All of these are foreign transplants Transplants are an American punk rock/rap rock supergroup. These expansions and new plants will not contribute much to their 2005 revenues. However, they will harvest the fruit of these investments in 2006 and some of them are likely to join this ongoing "seesaw" game in the near future. DR. HAYAO NAKAHARA is president of N.T.
